Danny Verna, 50, knows getting in shape—he served for four years in the US Marine Corps after college, and, as he puts it “developed an increasing interest in fitness as I’ve gotten older.” Yet, two years ago, despite training three times a week, he found himself with extra weight and “a body composition that “didn’t reflect my efforts in the gym.” Today, he’s lighter, leaner and has a whole new attitude about training. A lot has changed for Jon Bon Jovi since his first studio album debuted in 1984. Various injuries over the years have made him smarter about how he exercises, working with a trainer five to six times a week with a bit less heavy lifting and more of a focus in mobility. He’s more carb conscious, has traded the early band days of munching on McDonalds burgers for snacks like fruits and vegetables (and the occasional glass of rosé), and is still practicing his backhand stroke as a big tennis buff. Babs Olusanmokun’s latest role in “The Ministry of #UngentlemanlyWarfare” has him playing Mr. Heron, a SSRF member whose movements are quick and smooth in a world of espionage. It’s a big pivot from the desert-set sword fighting you see with his character in #Dune. He says that moment involved “six hours of working out with a knife,” but he found joy in mastering the intense level of choreography needed to execute the scene. When he’s not training for a role, Olusanmokun is a big jiu-jitsu guy. However, if work prevents him from squeezing the form of martial arts into his schedule, he focuses on “pushing the gas” with functionality-focused workouts. All the hard work means the actor tries not to limit himself too much when it comes to what he puts in his body.
