UOG reinstates scholarships at 11th hour • By Danielle Baza The University of Guam Wednesday night notified its Regent Scholarship recipients that UOG will continue to fund the scholarship in the upcoming semester, which starts January 18. This follows Kandit’s exposure of the university’s intentions to defund the program. On November 29, 2021, UOG financial aid director Mark Duarte emailed Regent Scholars informing them UOG had decided to cut funding for their tuition in the Spring semester. Kandit broke that story, which led to concerns from Speaker Therese Terlaje, Vice Speaker Tina Muna Barnes, and Senator Amanda Shelton. In an email sent to UOG students Wednesday afternoon from UOG’s communications officer Jonas Macapinlac, he writes: “Hafa Adai Regent Scholar, “I am pleased to let you know that the University of Guam will continue funding your Regent Scholarships for the upcoming Fañomnâkan (Jan. – May) 2022 semester. “Dr. Lawrence Camacho, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Success will be contacting you with information about a special meeting on the Regent Scholarships which will be held on Friday, Jan. 14. We hope you will be able to attend. “We understand the financial difficulties that some of our students are facing. That’s why we will continue to prioritize the success of our students through financial support programs that will help make your education more affordable. “For the upcoming semester, all eligible registered students will receive up to $700 in direct grant aid, and there will be an opportunity to apply for the UOG Cares Emergency Grant for students with major financial needs. Please visit www.uog.edu for more information on these programs.” It seems the efforts of the college students to speak up and be heard have not fallen on deaf ears at the university this time. Scrutiny and accountability have prevailed. UOG’s Regent Scholars are safe. For now.

This is Vickilyn Manglona. Because of her, Kandit News Group had a local presence on Saipan to cover the historic impeachment of Gov. Ralph Torres on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Kandit has been following this story of the corruption of the governor since November 2019. Pioneers of that movement numbered fewer in those days than today, but they included Vick. In those days, she struggled with whether to say anything, not because she was ashamed of her convictions, but because she did not want the sins and pain of her past to discolor the journey to justice. Vickilyn’s past is much like the rest of us in Kandit. We simply are sinners, who seized the opportunity for a new chance at citizenship. And much like the rest of us in Kandit, Vick was a victim of police and public corruption in Guam. It may be why she connects so seamlessly with us. More importantly, and truly we are hard pressed to find someone else like her, she is THE reason a major police and public corruption case is being prosecuted against a very powerful person on Guam. How many people in the media or really any other profession can say they participated in the takedown of corruption in both Guam and the CNMI? Vickilyn symbolizes the hope many of us, who cross the Rubicon of malcontent from past decisions… that our pasts don’t define us, if we dedicate ourselves now to Light, Truth, and Love. This is our friend and associate, Vickilyn Manglona Teregeyo, and we are proud of her. We are grateful she has been our correspondent in the CNMI, whose people we love, and with whose struggle at identify. Thank you, Vickilyn, for walking in history with us.

Democrats react to impeachment The following is a statement from Nola Hix, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of the Northern Mariana Islands: The 22nd CNMI House of Representatives have officially delivered on the people’s mandate. We commend JGO Chairwoman Celina Babauta and her JGO house committee members for their outstanding work as the amount of time and months long effort given to this investigation was not an easy triumph. We applaud the collective efforts of the Democratic Caucus Majority because without their steadfast leadership we would not be where we are today. The sacrifices of the legislators, witnesses, and our communities now lay in the hands of the Senate. With the 15-4-1 vote we can only hope the same 5 mistakes don’t happen again and we thank the other members of the minority for doing what’s right. The people want our elected officials to deliver and the impeachment is a major solution to many of the ongoing issues that have somehow become the norm for several years now. This is the first step in eradicating corruption, abuse, and years of mistrust in the people’s government that will take years to restore. Our people deserve justice and closure. Today’s impeachment votes are a step towards that direction. The impeachment of Ralph Dlg Torres has been on the agenda since the elected Democrats took their oath of office on Jan 11, 2021 which actually marked their 1 year in office as of yesterday. What a remarkable coincidence and we share this historic victory with the people of the CNMI and everyone who’s stood with us in this journey. ——- Photo caption: Dr. Carlos Camacho, the first governor of the CNMI, joined the efforts of pro-impeachment activists outside the Commonwealth Legislature prior to the impeachment of Ralph Torres.
