I’m excited to share a “first look” of our film doing the festival rounds. We filmed this about 4 yrs ago. Its not commissioned (not commercial), completely self-funded and was, and still is, a true passion project. Sara wrote the description: “In My Alaskan Journey, wildlife camerawoman Erin Ranney explores four unique areas of Alaska’s coast, revealing stunning landscapes and iconic wildlife along the way. Guided by Alaska’s history, her family’s stories, and her own memories, Erin’s journey weaves the past with the present, and paints a hopeful future for the land and wildlife of coastal Alaska.” I’m so grateful for everyone who helped with this project, our AMAZING team and my family for sharing their stories and making this project possible. I cannot thank my family enough, especially my parents and my aunt and uncle. Big thanks to @jack_j87 for bringing this to life (from filming to editing to producing to more). To @saraofthewild ,Kris Ranney, @willnphoto , @rowanaitchison , @tvcameragirl and @jasonsching for their stunning filming on this. To @brownbeats for the beautiful music and sound design. To @brighty_dit_editor for her incredible color work. To my sister, @alexan.ranney , for her amazing script work. To Wills Brown for his awesome editing work in the last stages. To @jstearnsderulo who believed in it from the start and helped with development. To @augustisland for helping last minute when we were looking for footage of Pebble protests and letting us use a couple of his clips. To my former elementary teacher, Mr. Archer, for recording the narration in his studio. And to every person who encouraged and helped us over the years- watched cuts, read over scripts and more. This was filmed in the homelands of the Eyak, Lingit Aani (Tlingit), Yup’ik/Cup’ik and Alutiiq (Sugpiaq). For thousands of years these ecosystems and this land has been protected and cared for by these communities. And I am grateful to be a guest on these lands. I encourage everyone to support local indigenous led groups in these areas like @unitedtribesofbristolbay and @defendyakutat who continue to work to protect these areas.

And that’s a wrap on our little screening tour as it’s time for me to head off on shoots. I’ve been completely overwhelmed with the love and support. We started with two screenings at the Olympia Center. A huge thank you to @mugsie_b for setting those up for me while I was away on a shoot, my husband for helping set it all up and to my mom for making it extra special with drinks and homemade cookies. It was a fun celebration with former teachers, old friends I hadn’t seen in a while, my parents former students and more. The tickets were free but people still donated more than $1700 to be split between @defendyakutat and @unitedtribesofbristolbay , two locals groups doing the work on the ground to protect areas we filmed in. The Cordova showing was overwhelming! Cordova showed up- over 200 people attended and tickets were free again but people donated over $1100 to the Cape St. Elias Lighthouse Association to help refurbish one of the old lighthouse buildings (also shown in the film). I was so excited to have so many kids asking questions in the Q&A. And there was a huge bonus of my dad @ranneyfishandtrees making it in from the remote camp, a ton of family there and my grandma getting to see the film for the very first time 🥰. Thanks to the PWS Audubon society and my aunt @orcaadventress for setting the screening up. A big thank you to the two talented artists, @alexan.ehrich and @samanthalynnm_ for creating beautiful art from the film. These are still available! Prints from Alexan include a 10% donation to @unitedtribesofbristolbay (the ones in Cordova are 100% to them) and @samanthalynnm_ prints and stickers give a 20% donation to @unitedtribesofbristolbay and @defendyakutat. Thanks to everyone who made this such a special experience and to everyone who donated. To the film team for being so supportive of these screenings. And to my family who helped make it all happen. My heart is full. You can still donate to these three wonderful local groups as well. They all do incredible work to protect and preserve these areas. I’ll link them in my stories!

While I’m on a ‘sharing spree’ since being back in service, I thought I’d share some of my kit. It can be a bit tricky to find the information for “dealing with periods during field work” if you’re not sure where to look. If you look for camping or backpacking with your period, you’ll usually find the most relevant info, most of it in blogs. It’s a topic some people are quite embarrassed to talk about but it’s a really important one to be confident and comfortable with going into the field. Over the years I’ve been constantly working to create the right “period kit” to bring along on shoots- an easy grab and go bag that’s got anything I need to stay healthy and have it all covered. It’s evolved and continuously evolves (even last shoot I’ve improved it) but I thought I’d share: - 2-3 cups (an extra in case I drop one in an unfortunate place) - Cup wash - Wet wipes (specifically sensitive ones) - Tampons and pads - 3 pairs period underwear - Yeast infection medication - UTI medication (consult with your doctor) - Ural satchels - Cranberry tablets - Pain medication for cramps - Hot water bottle for cramps - Field bidet or water bladder for cleaning and washing - Soap for washing your hands before and after (especially with cups) - Some spare sandwich bags (or even a roll of dog bags) - Kula cloth - Field trowel - Field med book (tiny travel one in my med kit) If anyone who deals with periods has any questions about dealing with them in the field, please feel free to comment on here or if you’re more comfortable, just DM. I am obviously not a doctor, this is just what works for me. Talk to your doctor about any medical issues related to pain, UTIs etc. Everyone is different and different products work for different people. I’ve learned from my own mistakes (and a bloody lot of them at that 🤷🏼‍♀️😂). I’m adding some notes in the comments…

I wrote this the day after we submitted our film to it’s first festival and I thought I’d share, because instead of posting I left WiFi for almost 10 weeks: “I said I would share this photo when we finished the film as my thought was I’d feel as happy as I was in this photo. It’s in one of my favorite places, swimming with bears and salmon, covered in mud and so happy. We were close to being done filming. I didn’t want to leave. Turns out though, now that we’ve entered it, I’ve had so many mixed feelings and not all are great. It’s taken a while- 4 years since the start of filming. My filming has gotten WAY better. We had a small budget. It feels quite personal and I’m not sure how I feel about other people seeing/judging it, especially as no one really knows everything that went into it. And I’m on camera, which brings a lot of extra self conscious feelings. I’m not sure I realized these feelings would exist after a project like this, I honestly thought it would be all happy. Thanks to some good pep talks and encouragement, I’ve been working on shifting my perspective. Some of the most important people have seen it, my family, and they really enjoyed it. I’m working on making that my focus. My filming has improved so much, and I should celebrate that, not feel bad. When I think about it, I wouldn’t want to have had 4 years gone by without progressing. I learned so much from the year of planning, from every day out in the field and the edit. I’m so grateful for all of those people who worked on it and cheered us on. I’m grateful to the friends I made along the way. And grateful for my family, who I somehow appreciate and admire even more. The film is far from perfect but we did it. And I’m really proud of that.” Seeing my own work and self onscreen is hard. I can also just be really hard on myself. This project definitely brought back self conscious feelings I hadn’t had in a while, which is funny when the filming aspect did the exact opposite. I was beyond happy in the field. …Continued in comments…
