making compost from garden waste is an easy and interesting process compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow…making it at home helps to keep garden waste out of landfills where it rots and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas composting uses three basic ingredients… Browns - materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs
Greens - includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds and Water - the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development there’s many different ways of producing compost with different levels of efficiency if you’re going for the optimum your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens you should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles the brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water provides moisture to help break down the organic matter years I just heaped everything into a pile out of sight...and that can work...but it’s hard to manage and harvest from 18 months ago we made dedicated bays resulting in a more ordered system It’s been incredible to see the amount of green water that is absorbed...waste which decomposes into dark crumbly fertile compost. the first picture demonstrates one great way of composting…it’s from @the.suburban.servant layers of horse manure, sawdust and mulched green garden waste have been laid in the 1 meter cubed space and water added to speed up the decomposition I use one bay for fresh material and when that has ‘cooked’ I move it to the next I also have the added magical ingredient of chicken poo our hen coop is right beside heaps which makes it easy for me to clean their living quarters directly onto the green heap which accelerates the decomposing process and enriches the final product an occasional turning of the heap adds oxygen which speeds up the process #garden #hens #hencoop #gardening #compost #composting #gardenhens #compostheap #pruning

parts of Southern California occasionally experience a superbloom which is when the desert landscape comes alive with blossoming wild poppies, verbena, lilies, primroses, prickly pear and dozens of other species of ephemeral native spring wildflowers the term superbloom is used to describe years when excess rain causes chaparral and desert landscapes to produce more flowers than normal, with carpets of wildflowers sometimes covering entire landscapes for a brief period the seeds of desert wildflowers are made to last—they often have thick or waxy coatings and are able to survive in a dormant state for years or decades the best superblooms occur after extended drought has had time to kill off invasive weeds that compete with native wildflowers for sunlight, followed by above average rainfall when the excess rain soaks and softens the seed coats the plants germinate en masse, producing acres and acres of blossoms in some desert areas, rare species that only bloom every few years, or even decades, can pop up in super blooms you can get flowers, which in some cases, are thought to be extinct for those interested in the use of the word chaparral in the explanations super blooms - it’s vegetation composed of broad-leaved evergreen shrubs, bushes, and small trees usually less than 8 feet tall forming dense thickets chaparrals is found in regions with a climate of hot, dry summers and mild and wet winters the term is applied primarily to the coastal and inland mountain vegetation of southwestern North America picture from Pinterest (photographer not credited) #superbloom #blossom #flowers #poppies #desert #chaparral #desertflowers #wildflowers #landscape #seeds #nature #outdoors #southerncalifornia

as we begin the move from autumn to winter I decided that today was the day for a look at an exotic tree….one that’s not suited to Irish or UK gardens…but one which may be familiar from holidays abroad the jacaranda tree is a beautiful tropical species which boasts clusters of fragrant purple trumpet-shaped blooms native to South America it makes for an excellent shade tree thanks to its fern-like foliage, whose leaves can grow up to 20 inches in length jacarandas can be considered either semi-evergreen or deciduous, depending on the climate it's grown in it grows quickly—adding up to 10 feet a year in the first few years of its life—and most of the blooming occurs in late spring to early summer though in warmer areas, the tree can flower at any time however only mature jacaranda trees have flowers although not native to the country it’s extremely popular in South Africa where it is believed to have first arrived in Gauteng in 1888 during the Gold Rush soon trees were being planted along almost every new street built in the rapidly growing cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria and each South African Spring - usually from early October to early November - a sea of purple petals from thousands of jacaranda trees blooms above suburban streets the blooming jacarandas have found their way into the cities mythology students joke that if you haven’t started revising for the end of year university exams before the jacarandas start to bloom, then you’ve probably left it too late! and it’s not just African students who dread the blossom….trees are even part of local lore at the University of Queensland, Australia with youngsters talking about the "purple panic" as they associate end of year exams with flowering Jacaranda festivals are a highlight of the year in many towns across Australia, including in Grafton, Applecross, Goodna, Camded, Woodville and Ipswich and add California, Texas, Florida, southern Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Botswana and India and you get an idea of just how well traveled this beauty is! #trees #streettrees #forest #sightseeing #southafrica #alienspecies #jacaranda #roadside #purple #southamerica #southamericannative
