Check out this stunning creature captured by the folks at @schmidtocean near the Galapagos Islands as part of their current expedition to explore hydrothermal vents and vertical reefs. It’s believed to be a Planctoteuthis squid that has evolved “streamers” to mimic siphonophores (an order that includes the Portuguese man o' war), but they’re not totally convinced. 👉🏻 Did you know the Schmidt Ocean Institute has an Artist-at-Sea program that welcomes artists to live and work aboard their research vessel alongside scientists and crew? 👉🏻 Did you also know the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel is named the Falkor (too) and their ROV is named SuBastian? Lush, beguiling environments spill across floors and dangle from ceilings in the works of Melissa Webb (@melissa.m.webb). The artist dyes and crochets vintage fibers into mossy, botanical forms that when layered and stitched together, become enchanting installations evocative of forests and gardens. Shades of green tend to dominate the textile ecosystems as a nod to “growth, verdancy, and inevitable change,” Webb says. “Through my work, I imagine a reclamation of the earth by wildness—a less human-centered future where we learn to live and thrive in symbiosis with the natural world.” More on Colossal, link in bio.

Midwestern flora and fauna are the foundation for Carol Long’s (@carollongpottery) lavishly adorned sculptures, which elegantly meld Art Nouveau embellishments with natural motifs. The Kansas-based artist continues her process of pushing and pulling the sides of a thrown vessel to achieve exaggerated proportions. Bublous bases, thin, curvy handles, and wobbly openings are characteristic of her ceramic sculptures, which she garnishes with slip-trail textures evoking fungi gills or bushy bunny tails. Long has pieces in several shows, including at the @salinaartcenter through October 15, 2023, and @fullercraft through January 28, 2024. She’s currently experimenting with adding molds and casts to her process and preparing to send a few sculptures to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference this spring with @intandemgallery. #ceramics #pottery #artnouveau

Alchemy and the depths of the occult manifest within Remedios Varo’s practice. The Spanish surrealist (1908-1963), whose works are on view at the Art Institute of Chicago (@artinstitutechi), was a researcher at heart with a vast, insatiable curiosity for discovering the unseen and underrecognized. Interested in scientific disciplines like astronomy and ecology along with psychology, tarot, and feminism, she was intent on expanding the limits of human perception. “I deliberately set out to make a mystical work, in the sense of revealing a mystery, or better, of expressing it through ways that do not always correspond to the logical order, but to an intuitive, divinatory, and irrational order,” she’s quoted as saying. Whether working with porcelain or spray paint on wood panel, Morel Doucet (@moreldoucet) begins with beauty. His goal is always to entice his viewers, to instantly captivate and tempt even the most unexpected audiences to engage with issues of displacement, the climate crisis, and what it means to be an immigrant in the U.S. He approaches his activism similarly because, to him, they’re one and the same. Doucet has become a steward of sorts as he advocates for his community in Little Haiti and grapples with how gentrification will ultimately change the Miami neighborhood. While vibrant and heavy with alluring botanical motifs, his work reflects destruction and highlights the flora, fauna, and people threatened by developers and anxiety about rising seas. Photographer Barry Webb (@barrywebbimages) continues his hunt for the speckled, glimmering, and ice-crested organisms that pop up near his home in South Buckinghamshire, U.K. Armed with a 90-millimeter macro lens, Webb ventures into woodlands and other natural areas where slime molds and fungi thrive. There, he zeroes in on their microscopic features, documenting their wildly diverse characteristics that often last for just a brief moment in time. More on Colossal, link in bio.

What do skateboarding and ceramics have in common? Artist and skater Brock DeBoer (@b_r_o_c_k ) discovered the medium as a teenager during a requisite stint in summer school, and he latched on. “When I sat at the potter’s wheel, I was challenging myself almost the same way as I did skateboarding,” he says. “Like, okay, next one is gonna be taller or wider, or I’m going to make this shape I saw in a book, and almost overnight, I had found something that would change my life.” Words by @katemothes, link in bio

Increasingly focusing on freestanding, sculptural works reliant almost exclusively on stiffened, crocheted material, McCormack (@mister_caitlin) has started to depart from her earlier wall-mounted relief compositions. “In 2020, I started building assemblages out of found objects, carefully upholstering the structures with hand-sewn velvet and adorning them so that their surfaces grew heavily-textured with an abundance of fiber sculptural relief forms,” she shares with Colossal. “The crocheted cotton is occasionally dyed with natural pigments sourced from my surroundings during hikes and time spent in the woods at rural residencies.” McCormack will include a large-scale piece at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee (@jewishmuseummilwaukee) as part of Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse, which opens September 8.
