I spent a large part of my career – 15 years or so – in the private sector. I was working in information technology at a very exciting time. The world was in the ‘internet bubble’ and we were all so enthusiastic about the possibilities. . Like so many others who work here, my world was upended by the terrorist attacks of 9/11. There was a change in me that I can’t quite describe, but I felt suddenly compelled to give back and to focus my talents towards something bigger. I had never before considered government service, but had this realization that I could either keep doing the same thing and keep climbing the corporate ladder or I could try something new. Something that would have a substantive impact on securing safety for our country and my family. . Mid-career hires, the term we use for people who join CIA mid-way through their professional career, add a ton of value to CIA. To solve hard problems, you need people to come at it from different angles and different perspectives. . Personally, I was able to leverage a wealth of experience I gained in the private industry to help CIA better liaise with its mission partners outside of government. It makes a lot of sense, when you think about it. CIA's mission relies on the ability for people to question one another. “Is this really what we should be doing? Is this really how we should be approaching it?” And if so, asking; “What are the risks? Should we be taking those risks?” As a mid-career hire, I think of problems and consider solutions differently. . . . #HumansofCIA

My family and I fled our home during the fall of Saigon. The fighting had quite literally reached our doorstep, and we had no other choice. We moved to a safe area but quickly realized that we would never be able to outrun the fighting and stay in our home country, so we got on a boat and joined the countless ‘boat people’ who were evacuating. For as harrowing as it was, we were the lucky ones. I don’t know how else to describe it other than luck. We got to the docks early enough to board one of the boats. Many people did not. . We spent several months moving around the refugee camps before a sponsor family in the United States brought us into their home. And for the next year or so after that, we started over. . My siblings and I were latchkey kids. We got ourselves to school, we got ourselves home. We made dinner for the family. It was strange in a lot of ways. Almost overnight, my parents went from being middle class professionals to low wage workers. They did what they needed to do. . At school, I got in my fair share of fights. I was the only kid who looked like me, and since my siblings went to different schools, we didn’t have each other to lean on. It would be another few years before someone who resembled me came to my school, a Cambodian boy. I don’t remember his name but I vividly remember his face. . I carry those childhood experiences with me in everything I do, to include my work here at CIA. What I see right now in the Agency, and what we are trying to achieve, is the collective enrichment that comes from officers sharing their own experiences. . That’s where CIA’s Agency Resource Groups come in and where, more personally, the Asian Pacific American Organization has impacted me. They create space for conversation. They encourage people to share their stories and allow room for important discussions. It’s all about informing, educating, and connecting people to one another—which ultimately makes us more effective in carrying out our vital national security mission. . . . #HumansofCIA
