It may be #WorldOceansDay, but as #Afghanistan is a landlocked country, we thought we'd take this opportunity to talk about different kinds of water sources!⁠ ⁠ The UN estimates that the percentage of Afghan households experiencing barriers to accessing water rose from 48% in 2021 to a staggering 60% in 2022, partly due to the severe droughts that the country has faced in recent years. To tackle this, we work in some of the most remote communities in Afghanistan to ensure their villages have access to water, helping them stay healthy and clean. 🌍 Today, we are marking #WorldEnvironmentDay by shedding light on the urgent need for collective action to protect #Afghanistan from the effects of climate change 🌱💚⁠ ⁠ From the breathtaking beauty of the Hindu Kush mountains to the vibrant biodiversity in its valleys, Afghanistan's environment is unique and awe-inspiring. However, the impacts of climate change are putting its ecosystem and its people at risk, with rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and water scarcity threatening communities across the country.⁠ ⁠ 💪 With your support, we can continue supporting local communities to implement eco-friendly initiatives, conserve precious resources, and build resilience against environmental challenges. Across #Afghanistan, many families are currently facing extreme financial challenges, compounded by the fact they must often rely on a sole breadwinner to make ends meet. For Samira*, her husband's income as a daily wage worker was not enough to buy the nutritious food her young son needed. ⁠ ⁠ Samira had always aspired to earn an income and support her family, telling us: 🗣️“I was very interested in working alongside my husband and having a personal business so that I can help my family to have good nutrients.”⁠ ⁠ Through one of our ongoing projects, Samira was able to make this dream a reality, receiving the seeds, training and tools she needed to start a kitchen garden, where she could grow vegetables to eat and sell.🪴👏🏽⁠ ⁠ “I received the training of home gardening from the Afghanaid staff to learn how to grow vegetables at home. Before the training, I did not know about growing vegetables and I did not know how to grow and maintain vegetables. After passing the theoretical and practical training, and with regular monitoring and guidance from project staff, I was able to learn.”⁠ ⁠ “For several weeks now, we have been having fresh, home-grown vegetables and will continue this practice rather than going for long distances to purchase from shops. In recent years, climate change has meant both floods and droughts have intensified in Chayabak, a small village in rural Badakhshan, making it difficult for farmers to rely on a harvest 🌾, while constantly fearing that their livelihoods will be taken away by the floods.⁠ ⁠ To reverse some of these consequences of climate change 🌍️, we've been supporting farmers in Chayabak and surrounding villages to replant and effectively irrigate their local forests, improving their access to clean water 💧 and protecting themselves from these increasingly frequent natural disasters. 💪🏽⁠ ⁠ 💚 Beyg Mohammad (pictured) was appointed the head of the Forest Management Association by his fellow villagers in Chayabak, a committee that now leads reforestation efforts in the village! 👏🏽⁠ ⁠ 🔗Learn more about this amazing project by tapping the link in our bio! :: Image description: an older man with a long white and grey beard smiles widely at the camera.
