Back in 1993, on a school night no less and all of 16, I dragged some friends to go see local goth band The Walk at some tiny little Melville bar which has long since disappeared. Before the band started they had some mixtape playing compiled by the vocalist I think. An amazing track came on and I plucked up the courage to ask what it was. I was informed that the band was called Rosetta Stone and he had got it from Sound Asylum in Braamfontein. On this date in 1799 - the Rosetta Stone was found. The #RosettaStone is a stele composed of granodiorite inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC during the Ptolemaic dynasty on behalf of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic and Demotic scripts respectively, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. The decree has only minor differences between the three versions, making the Rosetta Stone key to deciphering the Egyptian scripts. . The stone was carved during the Hellenistic period and is believed to have originally been displayed within a temple, possibly at nearby Sais. It was probably moved in late antiquity or during the Mamluk period, and was eventually used as building material in the construction of Fort Julien near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile Delta. It was discovered there in July 1799 by French officer Pierre-François Bouchard during the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt. 🗓️ ON THIS DAY, 19th July 1799… The Rosetta Stone was discovered! • Found by a French soldier serving in Napoleon’s Army, it was actually discovered by accident! While digging some foundations for a new fort at Rosetta (modern day Rashid in Northern Egypt) the large slab of granite was uncovered, it had been used as a piece of scrap and built into part of an ancient wall. • Uncovering the slab they realised it was no piece of scrap, but would be very important in helping to decipher the Ancient Egyptian writings. 🔍 At this time the hieroglyphics remained a mystery, and no one could read and understand them, but the Rosetta Stone presented an ancient decree of a Pharaoh named Ptolemy V, and it was written in three different scripts; Hieroglyphics, Demotic and Greek. The Greek text was still understandable to scholars, and crucially it advised that all three scripts had the identical meaning. The Rosetta Stone famously became the key to unlocking the secrets of the ancient Egyptian writings which had been lost for thousands of years. 😮 • Various scholars made good progress in understanding the picture writing, and finally an Egyptologist called Jean-Francois Champollion deciphered the code and translated the hieroglyphics. ROSETTA TAŞI Rosetta Taşı Mısır’da bir kale yapımı sırasında Fransız askeri tarafından rastlantı sonucu bulunmuştur. Taş belli başlı üç Mısır tapınağına gönderilmek üzere üç farklı dilde yazılmıştır. Bu diller Demotik (mısır halkının kullandığı dil), hiyeroglif ve Antik Yunancadır. Taşın üç farklı dilde yazılması hiyeroglif yazısının esrarının çözülmesine vesile olmuş ve Rosetta taşı hiyeroglif yazısının esrarını çözen taş olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Rosetta taşındaki üç farklı dilde yazılan metinlerin aynı anlamı ifade ettiği çok sonradan anlaşılabilmiştir. Antik Mısır'da bazı rahipler artan vergiler nedeniyle çocuk firavun V. Ptolemy’ye karşı ayaklanmışlardır. Diğer rahipler ise V. Ptolemy'e sadık kalmaya karar vermiş ve Memfis'te toplanarak firavuna bağlılıklarını bildirmişlerdir. Rosetta taşındaki fermanda, firavunun isyanı bastırışı, rahiplere verdiği destek, tutukluları serbest bırakışı, vergileri azaltışı ve vergi borçlarını affedişi anlatılmaktadır. Bunun yanında firavuna dua etmek doğum gününü kutlamak gibi yüceleştirici tabulara da yer verilmiştir.
