Happy Friday. Spent all morning yesterday having coffee in my favorite spot in the front Living Room, and staring out the window at this Hydrangea Tree. Two years ago when we were selling my Moms house, I planted this Hydrangea Tree to remind me of her. She had one in her front yard, that I would trim hundreds of blooms from every year, and you wouldn’t even notice, that’s how large it was. And once the house sold I wouldn’t be able to clip them anymore. Now I sit in the living room and think of her as I stare out the window and look at my tree. Remember she passed in June. I’ve just driven through Harrington Park. I’ve never noticed, how many streets in this exclusive suburb, are lined with Chinese Elms. Maybe i noticed them this time because they have dropped all their leaves, and I can see the beautiful trunks? They are beautiful weeping trees that have small serrated leaves. They are so small, they hardly make any mess when they fall. They seem to just disappear into the grass. If your thinking about planting one there are two varieties to choose from. The original variety Ulmus parvifolia has a beautiful weeping habit and it can grow 10ms high by 10ms wide. There is a more compact variety called Ulmus parvifolia “Todd”. It doesn’t weep so it might be more suited for smaller spaces. I have both varieties in my garden and I love them. I especially love the colour of the foliage in spring. The colour green is so relaxing for me. We have Chinese Elms here at the nursery. We have both varieties. They are super hardy and easy to grow. The seedlings often pop up in gardens. Summer garden. One of my secrets for helping the less mature areas of my garden look more full: putting plants in pots and placing them in the bed near the plants that will eventually fill the area. Since it was a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree focus I might as well share some uncommon topics and questions that come up about your tree! To anyone who owns or wants a FLF, they know or should know, they are probably one of the most rewards indoor trees. FLF are fast growers, and while they have the title of being finicky, I’d say they are actually pretty low maintenance. Here are a couple of basics first: 💧Water when soil is dry at least 2inches down, or more. They like to dry out. Keep in mind the tree will dry out faster in the summer. ☀️Keep them in bright indirect sunlight. They need lots of light to keep those big leaves pointing up! Direct sun will burn their leaves, this will look like your leaf got a tan. ✨Clean their leaves occasionally. This helps with their shine and photosynthesis. Don’t stop reading yet, 🌱If your leaves start to come out with little red- brownish spot this is caused by moisture stress. Typically it means the watering hasn’t been consistent, but light spotting isn’t worrisome. As the leaf matures the spots will dissipate. 🌱Brown spots on leaves. Quick disclaimer: no tree is going to be perfect. Your tree, up until this point has already been living for a while. There are lots of factors that go into the health of a tree, or plant. Back to brown spots. 🌱Light brown/ tan - this is caused from dryness. Probably the easiest to handle. It happens even when you think you’re doing the best job. Don’t stress out about a brown spot here for there. Think of the leaf like your own skin. 🌱Dark brown/ black - disease or root rot. Root rot will be on leaves towards the base of your tree and work it’s way up, dark brown/black in color. Disease will be more brown.
