Duke Pearson, I don't care who knows it, 2018 reissue. Following pre-ordering the exciting new releases of the Erich Kleinschuster 6tet issued by the small UK reissue label Wallen Bink l, I thought it would be appropriate to revisit their previous release, this obscure Duke Pearson album. The album, released originally in 1996 in the Blue Note Rare Groove Series, is a compilation of unreleased material from various sessions led by Pearson between 1968 and 1970 and is certainly more mainstream than his usual Blue Note output. The dominating sounds are those of bossa nova with a funky and relaxed feel to them. There are a few vocal tracks here with Flora Purim on one of them, compositions by Airto Moreira and Jobim. Komeda's theme from Rosemary's Baby also gets covered. First pressing. ………………………… It’s not cool to like #thirdeyeblind I think it was cool in 1996 when their self-titled debut LP came out, but I was 12, and I don’t think anything a twelve-year-old does can be cool. Anyway, their second album, #blue was the last to feature the core #3eb songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan. The San Francisco quartet always stood apart from the rest of the “Number Bands” of the 90’s (Matchbox 20, Eve 6, Blink 182) in that their lyrical content was extremely dark and weird and their sound much more expansive. “Semi-Charmed Life”, one of the biggest radio hits of the decade, was an ode to crystal meth-fueled orgasms, and “Jumper” was about suicide. Jenkins’ vocal cadence was unique in its short couplets, and almost beat poet-like in delivery. Other than the sugary end-of-the-century summer hit, “Never Let You Go”, ‘Blue’ went largely unnoticed. It’s too bad, because it’s a gorgeous production and an ambitious sophomore effort. Just like their debut, the latter half of the record is where they stretch out, sonically. “Camouflage”, “The Red Summer Sun” and “Farther” all contain multi-layered guitars by Cadogan and lovely falsetto work by Jenkins. The lyrical content remains mystical and melancholy: abortion, addiction, religion and death are the central themes. Like so many bands of the era that are still active, they’ve made more duds than studs at this point, and all of the original members have departed, aside from Jenkins. I’m pretty damn sentimental about music, and still consider the first two 3eb records to be absolutely brilliant and unique. I featured their self-titled LP about three years ago, and was thrilled to find a copy of ‘Blue’ still in shrink wrap, with VG+ discs on @parkavecds website. Thanks guys! 𝙊𝙐𝙏 𝙊𝙁 𝙁𝙊𝘾𝙐𝙎 '𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙚' (𝙊𝙐𝙏 𝙊𝙁 𝙁𝙊𝘾𝙐𝙎 '𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙚' (🇩🇪 1971) Original first press on Kuckuck 2375 010 On their eponymous second album, Out of Focus further develop their progressive jazz-rock sound, at the same time pushing in other directions as well. The rhythm section is still as upbeat and funky as ever, with those repetitive but odd rhythm patterns. There is now more sax in the mix, as well as the flute riffing, guitar wails, and chunky organ chords, with each instrument allowed ample soloing and no instrument over-dominant. If anything, this one dispenses with some of the heavy rock sound to get closer to the jazz influences. They slow down the pace on the strange folk song "It's Your Life" as well as the even stranger "Blue Sunday Morning" with its airy flute, church organ, and bizarre song narration. Lyrics are even sharper, whether ripping into the banality of television or the hypocrisy of religion, with the dark-edged humor more firmly in place. On the suite "Fly Bird Fly"/"Television Program," the group veers from soft to full in-your-face intensity while staying on a bouncy riff. Someone messaged me on #Discogs asking for pics of this record. I told them I'd post the photos here so we can all learn about the joys of record grading! This is a first stereo pressing of the Beach Boys album All Summer Long, released in July of 1964. Nice copies of this record are hard to find, so I can understand why they wanted photos. Also I have this listed at 27 dollars US, which is low for a first press, so I can understand why they might be suspicious! The record is graded VG+. You can see the only visible mark is a line through the last two tracks on side one. This doesn't affect play, fortunately. I graded the cover VG. As you can see it displays nicely but there's tape repairing the splits at the top and bottom edges. Barely noticeable, but an imperfection that takes it from VG+ to VG.
