—- 🌎Continuing our narrative about Canova, the protagonist of the distributed exhibition in the #VaticanMuseums. In the heart of the Pio Clementino Museum, in one of the cabinets created by the architect Simonetti around the ancient Courtyard of the Statues, a masterpiece by Antonio #Canova is exhibited: Triumphant Perseus. 🗡️The imposing statue in the center of the cabinet depicts the hero Perseus, with the helmet of Pluto, a winged cap, the sandals of Mercury and a sword: gifts granted by the gods to allow him to defeat Medusa, one of the Gorgons who had the power to petrify with a look. Triumphant Perseus, in a pose inspired by the Apollo of the Belvedere, raises the severed head of Medusa. 👁️Canova, as the sculptor, enjoys playing with myth by portraying the hero as he proudly turns his triumphant gaze on his trophy. Precisely because he dared to look at the monstrous head, he became a stone statue. #vaticanmuseum

—- 🌎Thursday is #VaticanContemporaryArt! Today from the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection is @lawrencecarroll_studio (1954-2019) with the work "Untitled (Isatu Sesay)". 🎨The large canvas was created in 2013 for the Holy See Pavilion at the 55th Venice Art Biennale, which was dedicated to Genesis and divided into three themes: Creation, De-Creation and Re-Creation. 💡Lawrence Carroll was entrusted with the moment of Re-creation, which he interpreted with "Another Life", composed of five large wall paintings and a floor piece, using organic materials to interpret the theme of regeneration. 🎗️The title of the work preserved in the Vatican Museums recalls the name of Isatu Sesay, a young girl from Sierra Leone who was a victim of the Ebola virus, underlining the reparatory and regenerative intention of art. #museivaticani #vaticanmuseums #vaticanmuseum

🗡️In the fateful battle, which took place in 312, Constantine opposed his rival Maxentius who he went on to defeat, represented on the right drowning in the Tiber, and the victory of Christianity over the pagan world. 🏛️Scattered with images from the Arch of Constantine and Trajan's Column, the scene depicts with topographical accuracy a view of the northern area of Rome with the inclusion of Monte Mario and the construction site of Villa Madama, built by Raphael for Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, future Pope Clement VII. ☁️Characterized by a vibrant plasticity and destined to enjoy vast success over the centuries, the scene shows a curious detail above: among the clouds one takes the shape of a lion, in homage to the then reigning Pope Leo X.

—- 🌎Apollo surrounded by the Muses, the central scene of Parnassus in the Room of the Segnatura, is reproduced by Renato Sansaini in this gelatin print. The artist, with his father Pompeo and his younger brother Salvatore, belonged to a dynasty of photographers documented in 1930 the Raphael Rooms. 📷On this date, the importance that photography, through the evolution of refined technical procedures, is able to record precisely the infinite variety of aspects and meanings inherent in the frescoes by Raphael was confirmed. 💡This print together with over sixty historical photographs and three glass negatives from the #VaticanMuseums Photo Library are present in the online digital exhibition, "The photographic memorial of the 'divin pittore'. 📱The exhibition is accessible free of charge on the Vatican Museums' portal (Online Catalogue). #vaticanmuseum

—- 🌎Thursday is #VaticanContemporaryArt! 🚪Today from the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection is the sculptor #EmilioGreco (1913-1995), who in 1962 was commissioned to create the new bronze doors of the Orvieto Cathedral. The #VaticanMuseums preserve splendid evidence of the fusion of three scenes of the monumental central door. 💭Over seven meters high and approximately four meters wide, the portal is divided into six panels dedicated to the "Corporal Works of Mercy": "Sheltering the Homeless", “Visiting the Sick” and “Visiting the Prisoners” are the three subjects preserved in the collection.

🌎Today is #InscriptaeStories.
💈Here we are again in a barber store, a tonstrina in or around Rome since payments are made in denarii. The customer is quite irritated, more than the one in the previous post: the somewhat inexperienced barber gave him a cut on his face and immediately and cunningly tried to treat it with the application of medicinal ointments to erase its traces; for he knows that an injury caused by the incompetence of those who should know their profession is considered and treated as a culpable act. He evidently does not know how to handle the razor, one of the tools of the barber’s trade along with scissors and comb. ⛏️We find them depicted, informing the reader about the occupation of the deceased on a slab in the Vatican Museums (sl. 2), formerly belonging to the tomb of Adeodatus.
He was of the Christian faith, as revealed by his name, one of the widespread Christian theophoric names compounded with Deus: A-deo-datus “given by God”. #museivaticani #vaticanmuseums #vaticanmuseum
