Today is a very special day for me. I am thrilled to announce my painting that is part of the Baltimore Museum of Art Collection is on view now at @baltimoremuseumofart The BMA’s contemporary wing has been updated with a new selection of works by contemporary artists. Since fall 2021, every six months the BMA has presented rotations of the contemporary collection under the umbrella title How Do We Know the World? . ⁣It’s truly an honor to be included in this very important and amazing collection next to some of the greatest artists that I admire. I am so happy and honored to show my art at this great museum in the city of Baltimore that has become my second home🤎outside Brazil. “Won’t you celebrate with me” 180 x 150 cm, Acrylic on Canvas, 2022 Brazil-born, Baltimore-based artist Zéh Palito often depicts the figures in his works in positions of power, self-confidence, and respite from the world. Won’t you celebrate with me features Black patrons enjoying the pool at the Colbrook Motel in Chester, Virginia. The Colbrook, believed to be one of the first Black-owned motels in the United States, was included in an edition of The Negro Motorist Green Book, a publication that highlighted safe businesses for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era. Palito gleaned the title of this painting from the same-named poem by Baltimorean and former Maryland Poet Laureate Lucille Clifton (1936-2010). She has inspired me so much throughout the last few years. So, I am sending those flowers to her. 💐 Short story… my grandmother has passed away 3 years ago and she said something funny but powerful that makes me always think and appreciate people while they are here with us. She said this : “Don’t bring flowers to my funeral, either give me flowers while I’m alive to enjoy, or don’t give them at all.” Sending flowers to Katherine and her art legacy. “Felicidade pede Bis” Pintura inspirada nessa canção do “Fundo de Quintal” meu grupo favorito do Brasil. A primeira vez que eu escutei a música deles foi em um Churrasco na Casa dos meus Tios o som vinha de uma fita cassete do carro antigo deles, bons tempos. E coincidentemente o primeiro show que eu fui na vida foi do “Fundo de Quintal” em 2001 no “Clube dos Estudantes” uma das minhas maiores memórias afetivas, não esqueço até hoje. Na época eu era menor de idade então fui acompanhado dos meus tios e primos. Todos os músicos e a maioria do público estavam vestidos de branco em homenagem ao último álbum deles chamado “Simplicidade”. Ver o salão da festa lotado, todos dançando, felizes e celebrando aquele momento, foi mágico. A festa era na Zona Sul da cidade, a pobreza e os problemas sociais estavam lá, mas com a magia da música “ficavam pro lado de fora da festa”, era apenas celebração. Que pensando agora nos deixa aquela sensação de que no passado as pessoas eram muito mais presentes, a multidão cantando e vivendo o momento ao máximo, sem celular ou alguma distração tecnológica, somente os “flash’s” das câmera analógicas e a magia do samba alegrando a todos. O grupo “Fundo de Quintal” é muito mais que um grupo de samba, pois eles quebraram barreiras e abriram portas para muitos que vieram depois. Ficaram marcados por uma luta contra o preconceito. Na década de 1980, as rádio FMs, que ditavam o que seria sucesso, não tocavam samba, assim como as emissoras de TV não cediam espaço em sua programação para este gênero musical que depois veio ao auge nos anos 1990 e 2000. Finalizando esse relato um detalhe da letra dessa música que é pura poesia, mesmo que você não goste de samba não tem como não dizer que é lindo. “Preciso te encontrar

Seja pela lendária contribuição para o surgimento do samba, seja pela elegância e atuação no campo da moda, seja pelas pinturas nas quais retratava favelas, rituais religiosos, bailes de carnaval, rodas de choro e outras festas populares, Heitor dos Prazeres foi um grande protagonista e também promotor das vivências típicas dos subúrbios do Rio de Janeiro. Zéh Palito, por sua vez, nascido quase 100 anos depois de Heitor, começou sua carreira na pintura de rua, realizando murais e graffiti no interior paulista. Seu interesse pelo viés público da pintura o levou a expandir sua pesquisa a outros países e, em seguida, para as telas. A exposição “Vai Saudade” apresenta um conjunto de obras históricas de Heitor dos Prazeres ao lado de trabalhos inéditos de Zéh Palito. Os dois artistas, de diferentes gerações, se aproximam e se sobrepõem, realizando uma curiosa coreografia do samba. Dos Prazeres iniciou-se na pintura em 1936, depois de já ter trilhado uma brilhante carreira musical. Em suas obras, retratou bailes de carnaval, rodas de samba e outras festas populares, representando com riqueza de detalhes e cores vibrantes cenas do cotidiano da população negra no subúrbio do Rio de Janeiro. Prazeres began painting in 1936, after having already embarked on a brilliant musical career. In his works, he portrayed carnival balls, samba circles and other popular festivals, representing with rich details and vibrant colors scenes from the daily lives of the black population in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.
