Exodus Fishing Gibraltar

How do you bring your catch on board? • Here’s a snapshot of how Captain John and Sam bring our tunas on board the Exodus. With a custom-made pulley system we’re able to life the tail and then with some custom-designed hand gaffs we’re able to lift the tuna onto the boat. When it’s an extra heavy one (200kg+) we either troll it in to land and then lift it using a crane or attach a separate pulley system for the hand gaffs so that we don’t have to do the heavy lifting! 🐟 • #lifting #fish #pulley #tuna #tunafishing #fishing #fishinglife #fishingdaily #howtofish #fishingreel #shimano #99problems #catchingfish #catchoftheday #offshore #offshorefishing #biggame #biggamefishing #snook #marlin #gt #yellowfin #trolling #livebait #lure #lurefishing #fishingtrip #fishingtips #charter #captain

Look at the colours on this tuna! • These finlets found on bluefin tuna are a series of bright yellow, non-retractable fins that every bluefin has. They often cause people to believe that bluefin tuna are yellowfin, when in reality the colour of the finlets has nothing to do with the species. They are hypothesised to assist these fast-swimming fish in propelling itself forward at enormous speeds in short bursts! • #oceanlife #nature #marine #brightcolour #fishing #tuna #tailsup #marinelife #pelagic #topwater #deepsea #offshore #offshorefishing #trending #trend #homepage #fishingreels #fishingreel #pesca #atun #fishinglife #tiagra #exodus #clearwater #seamonster #streamline #fish

How in the world did we do that? As some background, we were trolling for giant bluefin tuna in the Strait of Gibraltar. Normally we use 2 x 130W Shimano Tiagra and 1 x 80W Shimano Tiagra. The tuna were being difficult that day and surfacing in very small localised groups. Basically this meant that small clusters of boats were getting double or triple strikes. We got a call shortly after from our friends on board @ariatunafishing (check them out!) who told us that they had put out two 50lb rods and reels hoping to catch some smaller tuna (for example we had caught a 70kg fish that week). As per Sod’s Law, two 500lbs+ fish smashed the lures topwater on these two rods and after an hour or so they gave us a call to and help them. We took one of the rods and left them with the bigger fish. Unfortunately the butt had already completely broken off, so we couldn’t fight it stand-up or even place it well into the rod holder. This meant that the rod was basically a goner as we couldn’t control in what direction it would bend. We also couldn’t hand line the fish as we could tell it was over 200kg and the braid was extremely thin, meaning that it cut through even the Pelagic gloves like butter. Soon after, as expected, the rod shattered and Capt. John had to think of a solution fast. We took out the spare 80W and planned to use it. Capt. John tied the braid to a cleat and then helped Sam remove some of the braid from the 80W. Once done, he tied an Alberto knot to the braid that the tuna was on and Sam lifted the tuna slightly so that the line could be removed from the cleat. We managed to get that done and shortly after we were able to fight the fish on the 80W. What a difference that made to the flimsy, broken 50lbs gear! Craig and Ethan from the Aria then swam over to help us after a couple hours (as their fish had broken off last minute) and we managed to land this giant 500lbs tuna 🙌🏼🐟 What a story, what teamwork and what a day 🔥 #fishing #fishinglife #fishingdaily #tuna #tunafishing #biggame #monsterfish #howtofish #howto #trolling #deepsea #offshore #offshorefishing #fishingtrip #fishingtip #bluefin #giant #charter #boat #pesca #shimano #tiagra

Popping on The Exodus 🔥 • This is a snapshot of what it’s like when he hook up a fish popping on the Exodus. The first step is always to remove obstacles from the boat itself. We therefore get the live bait rods (Shimano Tyrnos 50 and Shimano 50W reels) and move them to the rod holders above. Those balloons you see are what we attach to the leader to keep the live bait about 2 metres from the surface. The Exodus is custom built for tuna fishing so you’ll see that we have an external steering wheel. This allows the Captain (or Sam when Capt John is on the rod) to manoeuvre the boat away from the fishing line. It takes extreme concentration and skill as one wrong move can mean that the fish breaks off or the line breaks. This video was kindly taken by our good friend Eliott who joined us on board! The lure we were using was an @ims_lures flying fish 210. Capt. John bending that popping rod today 🔥 • Insane activity. We had small flying fish everywhere with dolphins and tunas going crazy trying to catch them.
