Exploring Slovenia

Talking about wild and challenging! Mt. Velika Baba might be notorious for serious climbing routes (it even has a 700-m Alpine climbing route!), but also gravel on exposed trails, lots of exposure and, above all, mind-blowing views and totally wild nature. It depends on the route you take, but you will likely be the only one at the top and might not meet more than five people on the whole trail. . . . With the heat easing down a bit and beautiful sunny days, now is the perfect time to enjoy hikes in the Karavanke Alps. On the way to the most photogenic mountain of the Julian Alps, imposing Jalovec, also one of the most talked about mountains in Slovenia. Climbing it is a true accomplishment, and as such a thrilling climbing experience to put even the most experienced and adventure-seeking mountaineers to the test. Photo by 📸 @alenka_zakelj . . . This deep blue lake (in the first three photos) lies underneath a long rocky massif that connects Mt. Krn, 2,244 m, on the far left (west) and Mt. Peski, 2,035 m, on the right (east). It’s actually one of the three Krn Lakes, of which the most significant one, Krn Lake, is also the biggest Alpine lake in Slovenia (photos 4, 5). Lake at Lužnica, on the other hand, is located on the opposite side of the massif at 1,801 m. The third Krn Lake is called Dupeljsko jezero (photo 6) and is the smallest of the three lakes. This grassy peak lies lonely underneath towering limestone massifs of the Mojstrovka Mountain Group, giving an impression of being the last comfortable resort in the otherwise tough Alpine world. Indeed, it truly is. Dotted with an array of wild flowers and nettles in the summer, the peak is buzzing with bees and butterflies, and once you’ve settled among them, you can enjoy an idyllic picnic with stunning views.
