Statement from Mate Ma’a Tonga team. June 29, 2019 The players and staff of the Mate Ma’a Tonga rugby league team wishes to distance itself from claims it is unhappy with the treatment it has received from the organisers of the inaugural Oceania Cup that was played at Mt Smart last Saturday 22nd June, 2019. The MMT team has played historic Tests against both the Australian Kangaroos’ and New Zealand Kiwis’ rugby league teams in the past nine months. These matches are the first of their kind and have followed on from the success of the MMT’s campaign through the 2017 World Cup. The match against Australia in 2018 was run successfully by the NRL, and last weekend’s Test match against the New Zealand was the newly-formed Oceania Cup, delivered by Duco Events. In both events the MMT players received professional treatment and compensation levels that have previously not been present for Tests involving the team. “Our relationship with The Rugby League International Federation and New Zealand Rugby League is very good and we are happy with the agreements that were put in place, and we have in place for future matches,” said MMT head coach Kristian Woolf. “The large majority of comments from a member of the Tonga Advisory Council do not sit in line with how the team felt about the events. “Financially, the MMT team is indebted to a small but loyal group of sponsors we have built since the 2017 World Cup, that have allowed us to produce a professional camp that gives the players the best possible opportunity to prepare at the levels NRL players expect. “Of course our management team, run by Scott Clark, is always looking for new corporate partners, and they will be an important part of our ability to prepare heading into the end-of-season Tests. “Most importantly, we need the continued support of our wonderful fans that have turned out at the matches – they are the one true thing that sets us apart from other teams in world rugby league.” ENDS Source: Mate Ma’a Tonga Media Manager
