As you see my images of baby sea turtles in South Florida, you would assume that this is how I always come across them; out on their first swim in a natural environment on their initial struggle to survive. If only that were the actual truth. In fact, I frequently come across baby sea turtles struggling with the many hurdles imposed by humans. First, they must emerge from their nest without any artificial disturbances such as plastics impeding their exit. Second, the light pollution from nearby buildings and other sources will disorient them away from the ocean into drains, streets, and any other man-made obstruction you can imagine. Therefore, at times, I will come across baby sea turtles that are flattened by vehicles, stuck in drains/pockets, and fatigued from crawling around all night confused by the artificial lights. Finally, if they make it to the ocean, they may consume small plastic debris that will obstruct their digestive tract, causing death. In other words, when you see my images, please know that there’s another side to the story. A story where these turtles are undertaking another level of challenges that are currently threatening their existence. Let’s plan a future where we take into account the survival of other species by incorporating strategies when it comes to our personal choices in our day to day lives; which, most importantly, includes the leaders we elect. ✊🏽🌎 • #vote #vote2020 #seaturtle #conservation #florida #sonyalpha #nauticamhousings #earthcapture #yourshotphotographer

As I was on a road trip with my family I realized that in the U.S. we are encompassed by a forest of giants on opposite coastlines; the redwoods in the West and the cypress trees in the East. These forest consist of ancient trees that have existed long before human industrialization. Each tree has been a firsthand witness of the eradication of indigenous communities all the way down to the destruction of their environment. If we continue down this path, the last surviving trees will bear witness to our own demise. 🌎 • #oldgrowthforest #california #florida #cypresstrees #redwoods #conservation

In the end, nature will prevail. However, whether or not we are still here after the fact depends deeply on us and what we do starting today. Let’s work with nature, not against it! What changes will you make?🌎✊🏽 • #conservation #seaturtle #earthcapture #sonyalpha #natgeoyourshot #climatechange #florida

Reef squid not only display a variety of skin and color patterns for visual communication, but they also have several postures that they use to get messages across to their own and others! Here we have what they call the plaid and full-V display! Usually performed by juveniles to confuse predators. These guys are too cool. 🖤🦑 • #reefsquid #squid #sonyalpha #nauticamhousings #earthcapture #yourshotphotographer #natgeo #florida #camouflage

The ember glow of a hatchling’s eye is reminiscent to a small piece of coal in a dying fire. We can do nothing and watch the glow flicker away, or we can fan that flame to help them survive! 🔥 • #earthcapture #yourshotphotographer #sonyalpha #nauticamhousings #seaturtle #bealpha #bbcearth #conservation #marineconservation #florida

I grew up going to the beach at @bill_baggs_state_park , aka “El Farito” among Hispanics, back in the mid to late 80’s. This was before hurricane Andrew when the park was overpopulated with invasive Australian pines. In fact, my earliest memories are the painful journeys walking on the sand to and from the beach stepping on those hard, pointy seedpods produced by these trees! Furthermore, I don’t recall ever seeing marked sea turtle nests on the beach during the Summer months back then. Fast forward 25+ years later and the dunes and costal hammocks are now brimming with native plants and wildlife thanks to the efforts set forth in properly restoring the park post hurricane Andrew. Also, the sea turtle nests are now monitored and protected by park staff and volunteers; which, give us the opportunity to experience the real Florida. Conservation and restoration efforts work, and although the park is not free of invasive species, it is in a much better place than it was decades ago. #therealflorida 🐢🐚🦋

This is a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling; but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is how it lives and how it interacts with its environment. How, as adults, their feeding behavior helps recycle important nutrients and keep sediments in the ocean floor in balance. How their nests on the beach provide much needed nutrients to a large variety of dune plants. Or, how they have tens of thousands of tiny organisms hitchhiking on their shells; creating a sort of micro world. Therefore, don’t just know the name, know the animal. You’ll gain much more respect for it and how it’s all connected. ✊🏽🐢🌍 #Verobeach #Conservation • #nauticamhousings #sonyalpha #florida #seaturtle #earthcapture #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot

Young green sea turtles tend to stick to their foraging areas along the Florida coast. At one point, in this particular spot, I spotted 5 of them feeding on algae at a time. They will most likely remain loyal to this spot throughout their sub-adult lives. In Miami, on the other hand, I haven’t had much luck finding foraging locations that prove to have high fidelity of visits. So, if you know of any good spots in Miami feel free to message me! ☺️ • #seaturtles #mavic2pro #droneshots #dronephotography #drone #mavicpro
