“Be true to yourself. It’s such a cliché, but it’s so true. If you truly remember that and own it, it makes running a business so much easier.” This holiday season, we're shining a light on artisans, creators, and makers who own small businesses: their successes, challenges, and hopes for the future. Today, we're celebrating Kathy Schuh, a Los Angeles based portrait and branding photographer and owner of Kathy Schuh Photography. “One way I’ve learned to overcome challenges is realizing they are hurdles and not walls. Whatever the problem is, I can usually find a solution and be true to myself and my business. Keeping my outlook in check is everything to overcoming anything that comes my way, good or bad. “I’ve also learned about collaboration over competition. I attend events or mixers with a dozen other photographers. I can either focus on them as my competition or own that they don’t see the world through my eyes, and I don’t through theirs. We are each unique and offer work and services as individual as we are. If I’m true to that, I always find the perfect clients for me. “My advice to other small business owners is to give yourself time! Don’t wait for something to be perfect to go for it. “I left my job of 20 years to pursue my passion and start this business. I’m a stay-at-home dad of two and run my business while raising my family.” This holiday season, we're shining a light on artisans, creators, and makers who own small businesses: their successes, challenges, and hopes for the future. Today, we're celebrating Chad Keith, owner of Sketches by Chad Keith, a personalized sketch business, drawn from photographs of pets, portraits, landscapes and more. “I was a chef before being a professional artist. I had chefs, front-of-the-house managers and restaurant owners as mentors. The thing I learned was client relations and how to directly speak to customers and potential clients. I’ve learned how to say “yes” now and figure it out later. “It's important to do what you love. If you are doing that, while working hard, putting your heart and soul into your product and business and giving back to the community, the rest will fall into place. I think people recognize and appreciate businesses that can show they care for their clients and product more than profits. “The best advice I can give to other small business owners is to be true to yourself and your business. Be confident but humble. “I am so fortunate that I am able to make a living doing what I love. I work hard. I work a lot. And I wouldn't have it any other way.” This holiday season, we're shining a light on artisans, creators, and makers who own small businesses: their successes, challenges, and hopes for the future. Today, we're celebrating Stacy Theurer, owner of Cake Devils, a business creating cakes and hand-crafted cake toppers. “With no physical presence and a very tiny budget to advertise, I had to make everything happen on my own,” says Stacy, who left her corporate job to follow her passion. “I built a website and got my business anywhere on the internet that I could. I left brochures and business cards everywhere I went. Little by little, the business came. “As my business continued to grow, and I became a mom, it became extremely challenging to work within the confines of the available hours of the restaurant kitchen I was utilizing. I picked up myself and my son and moved to North Carolina... a state where I am now licensed and inspected to work from home! “I think one of the most valuable things I’ve learned from a mentor is to never undervalue my work. Don't ever give up. There will be setbacks. There will be disappointments.
