Every month for me is #LatinxHeritageMonth so here is this collage i made of #WalterMercado. If you haven’t already seen the Netflix doc @muchoamormovie i highly recommended it! Walter broke so many barriers for Latin and Queer cultures. He IS light, love, and positivity and we could all use some of that right now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month because we need to dedicate some time to highlighting and celebrating voices that most often go unheard, but its important that companies, industry leaders, and just people in general can carry on this excitement and passion for Latinx culture past this one designated month. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our culture, our community continues succeeding and breaking barriers all year long. Representation is important. Visibility is important. It’s what inspires the younger generation of Latinx artists and doctors and engineers to work hard to be leaders within their local communities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I implore you to learn about cultures outside of your own, all the time; not just when a hashtag is trending. Learn about how you can do your part in creating space for people that are constantly being told they don’t belong. Learn to be open minded and to want equal opportunities across the board for everyone. And like always, lead with mucho, mucho amor🙏🏼💗🦋✨

i grew up not ever seeing Latina girls like me succeeding in the arts. I was only ever taught in school about mostly white male artists and when we crossed into Latin artists, Frida was often the only one ever mentioned. ⁣ Luckily, i grew up with art and creativity running through my veins and the most supportive parents i could’ve asked for. ⁣ ⁣ When my work for Taylor came out, i was blown away at the impact this had in my community. I received thousands of emails and dms from other Latina girls like me with big dreams of succeeding in the arts but little hope because of the lack of visibility. ⁣ This is why representation is so important. When industry leaders do their job in creating space for people from underrepresented communities, it changes the standard. It changes the landscape and it begins to change how the industry operates.⁣ ⁣ I’m proud of this work, I’m proud of the opportunity i was given to impact and inspire my community. I’ll never forget this💗⁣ ⁣ Ps: thank u to my art sister @savanaogburn for helping me create a lil sunflower covered Lover world for my Taylor/Maya can :) Maya got that Taylor can at the 1989 world tour and her mom gave it to me after she passed and i asked Taylor if she could sign it for me because Maya would have loved that. A full circle moment, truly. Every time i look at it i remember miracles are real and Maya is never truly gone💗🌻

Just really gotta give some praise bc dream projects with dream teams and dream content are unicorns in this industry and i don’t know what i did to deserve such a beautiful experience with this team @instagram but 😭😭😭 here i am🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To be valued, respected, and paid what my work is worth is a rare trifecta of circumstances that doesn’t feel like i come across very often. I can’t tell you the amount of jobs I’ve turned down bc the latter, especially, was lacking. To be valued and paid well as an immigrant, an artist, and a female creative is something that doesn’t feel like it should be a revolutionary concept. This team has gone above and beyond to value my opinions, my artistic style, and my personal story and this experience has really taught me that there’s a lot to be said about not settling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A year ago my manager @mckenziemann.mgr asked me to free write about what i wanted my career to look like. Not the specific jobs or people i wanted to work with, but in general what i wanted in my career. I wrote i wanted to be a fine artist but make commercial job money lol i wrote i wanted to be a fine artist bc i don’t care about quantity of jobs i care about quality. I want to work with people that inspire me and value my approach and the way i feel so deeply. I want to tell stories that matter and that impact people. I want to love and be proud of all the art i make and put my name on. It’s been a year since i wrote all of that, and 12 months and several meltdowns and reality checks (thank u @ mckenzie) later, i really feel that i am doing just what i said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Surround yourself by people that believe in you. Surround yourself by people that see your magic and know how valuable it is. Don’t settle for jobs that don’t provide this out of fear that you are missing out or out of fear of failing or being poor (believe me, I feared this for so long). If you do what you believe in, what your heart gets excited about, you won’t be disappointed. I believe that because I’m living it.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you @lismejia @oscarraymundo @jonesica

“Paint me like one of your Gorditas”⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ by @valheria123 and @nikkaduarte  earrings courtesy of @capricornkilljoy ⁣⁣ ⁣ Inspired by Fernando Botero’s “Woman with Dog” ⁣⁣ Botero always paints his subjects as too big, too opulent, too much for the frame, yet they are beautiful and celebrated. He reminds us to take up space as Latinx immigrants. May we all be as unapologetic as Botero y sus gorditas, Amén. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Also- So many aspects of empathy begin with understanding. We recommend the memoir “A Cup of Water Under My Bed”, “Open Veins of Latin America”, “Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza”, and “The House of Broken Angels.” A leer se dijo!

My pals @savanaogburn and @tavitulle have organized the #rookieprintsale happening through @rookiemag to benefit @movementvoterproject ! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Movement distributes its donations to over 400 local grassroots organizations currently focused on turning out voters in their communities. Movement continually assesses where extra funding will make the most difference, and we highly recommend browsing these orgs on their site at movement.vote. “ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m so excited to donate my photograph “Gummies” to this great cause and to be included amongst so many amazing artists from the Rookie community! Go get a print (or two or 3!!!) and register to vote!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ photo and styling by me model: @markrayvon makeup by @mckenziemann.mgr

new work for @instagram featuring the talented @june_canedo ! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was so inspired by June’s work because of its deep connection to her home and her family. As a fellow immigrant, i relate to that so much. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was able to use butterflies my abuelito painted for her collage because it felt fitting to connect my family and my roots into this shared immigrant experience. 🦋
