In September 2019, Nearly 2,000 wildfires are burning across Indonesia, turning the sky blood red and creating dense clouds of smoke that have caused respiratory problems for nearly a million people. Many of the fires were set deliberately to clear land for plantations that produce palm oil and wood pulp for making paper, the authorities said. The fires are an annual phenomenon as large plantations and small farmers use the age-old slash-and-burn method during the dry season to open new land for planting. Even though the fires are predictable, Indonesia is woefully unprepared to combat the blazes, which often start in remote and inaccessible areas. A firefighter extinguish the fire on burned peatland and forest at Sebangau national park on September 14, 2019 in the outskirts of Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Illegal blazes to clear land for agricultural plantations have raged across Indonesia's Sumatra and Borneo islands as recent satellite data showed that the number of forest fires have jumped sharply, adding concerns on the smog across South-East Asia and the impact of increasing wildfires outbreaks worldwide due to global warming. Orang Rimba (forest people) or known as Suku Anak Dalam is one of the tribe groups living in the depth of forests in Jambi Province (Sumatra, Indonesia). They are nomadic life based and their lives depend on what is provided by forests. Since the 1970s, many of these peoples have been displaced from their traditional lands by logging companies and palm oil plantations, and for some time have been the target of government settlement projects. #sukuanakdalam #orangrimba #forestpeople #jambi #sumatra #deforestation #saveourforest #forest #climaterefugees #climatechange #indonesia
