Sailfish (Istiophorus albicans in the Atlantic and Istiophorus platypterus in the Pacific) get their name from their sail-like dorsal fin, which extends higher than the depth of their body. Though it lays fairly flat when swimming normally, when the fish is excited, it will fully extend its sail, showing off the spectacular array of colors and spots.
Just two weeks of fishing left until the end of this year's Tag & Release Competition! Remember that fishing ends on October 31st and all tag cards must be online or in the TBF office by November 15th!

Research / Education / Advocacy The Billfish Foundation was founded by sportfishermen for sportfishermen to ensure that billfish are around for generations to come and to be a voice for the recreational community. Thank you to all that have supported us through membership, donation, and more. You are an essential part of who we are and we couldn't do it without you.
Black marlin (Istiompax indica) are one of the largest species of billfish, weighing a maximum of over 1,500lbs. Endemic to the Pacific and Indian Oceans, they are easily distinguishable as the only marlin species with rigid pectoral fins that cannot lay against their bodies. Some of the best places to encounter these big beauties are Panama and Australia's GBR! The population status of black marlin is currently unknown, as they are listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, which makes tagging and releasing them all the more important!
Next friday, October 16th, is the first day of our first ever online raffle! From October 16th to October 30th, for every $25 you spend on a TBF membership or at shop.billfish.org, you will receive one entry to win a YETI Panga, TBF Signature jacket, and a Sailfish membership for you or a friend!
How about a fun SoFlo Sailfish #recapture to get you through this hump day? This sailfish was tagged in April of 2017 by Capt Bouncer Smith, mate Abie Raymond, and angler Rocco Leon aboard Bouncer's Dusky 33. Three years later and only 2 nautical miles away, it was recaptured by the same team - Capt Bouncer Smith and mate Abie Raymond along with angler Ben Eskenazi! In that time, it more than doubled in weight, from 84in/30lbs to 90in/70lbs! Thank you to everyone that made this recapture possible, and to our Tag & Release Program Sponsors: @CasaViejaLodge @KingSailfishMounts @Garmin @YETI @CostaSunglasses @i.g.f.t.o

⭐Tag & Release Sponsor Highlight⭐ The final Tag & Release Sponsor Highlight is the International Game Fish Tournament Observers! For over 10 years, IGFTO has been training observers to authenticate the catch and release of billfish during tournaments. Like TBF, they work to conserve billfish and promote responsible fishing practices in tournaments worldwide!
The Members of the Month for October 2020 are Dave and Geri Christman! As Chairman’s Club Members, the Christman’s have been supporting TBF for over twenty years. Not only have they been generous with their support, they have been extraordinarily kind and welcoming toward us, and we truly look forward to seeing them in Cabo whenever possible! Not only are they dedicated conservationists, but they're also the nicest people you'll ever meet! Please join us in congratulating Dave and Geri on being this month’s Members of the Month!
One of the best parts of the TBF Gala is the costume contest! Send us photos of your best Halloween costume to firstname.lastname@example.org to be featured on the TBF Gala website, charityauction.bid/TBF2020. The week of the Gala, we'll vote, and the winners will receive a prize! 📸: Last year's winners, House Garmin!
