The biggest lesson I’ve learned in the past year is to take the break BEFORE the burnout. A change of scenery can help in big ways and it doesn’t always have to be some elaborate getaway and flying out. For me it’s listening to what my mind and body needs, then finding that safe place to enjoy the quiet, to recalibrate and regain balance. @pinkpalms.bahamas I’m so grateful for this magical space to come back to self. Sometimes all you can do is your best in the moment. Working on 3 murals during and after Grams last weeks felt great because well, art therapy. But I knew I wasn’t done. A recent chat with two young artists about letting go, took me back to final clean up + last details on these two. Though I’ve never been hugely attached to my art once it’s done, I’m not exempt from it even if it’s slight. These two drawings were extra special to me, but even more special? Them ending up right where they were meant to be. For me fulfillment resides not just in completion, but also in the process and the final destination. So I asked those artists… “If you had to choose between two pieces, which would you keep and which would you be willing to let go of?” Their expressions were priceless, I knew what they were thinking. So I rephrased the question and hit them with follow ups… “Which one would you rather be your legacy? The one that you feel is your best work or the one that you’re not a huge fan of? Their faces showed them going from, holding on to their favorite piece to truly considering the new questions. One chose to let go of his strongest piece knowing he needed to spend more time on the other. The other chose the piece that shows she is gifted in more than one medium. Proud teacher moment! In life as in art, our attachment styles influence how we show up in the world in all the ways. Showing up as our best selves, often times comes down to how we choose what should stay and what needs to go.
