At @daniwriter's workshop a couple of years ago, she quoted Dolly Parton: "Find out who you are, and do it on purpose." I loved that quote. Hadn't heard it before. ⠀ ⠀ Who I am, is someone who insists on saying things my own way even when the original is perfect - because I'm pathologically averse to copying anyone, which probably goes back to middle school when I witnessed the deadly and long-lasting consequences of wearing the same exact Polo shirt on the same day as the popular girl. So anyway, here's my version. ⠀ ⠀ If you want help putting a shitload of you into your business, sign up for my emails. They'll show you how. Link in bio or go to talkingshrimp.com/signup

"What are you doing, I don't want anything on social media." -- @ecklers, on his birthday. ⠀ I could have gone with a theme: Steven tolerating a selfie, Steven not tolerating a selfie, Steven saying "I don't like muggles" (nickname for mug shots, what we used to call selfies), Steven with art, Steven with books, Steven with seafood, Steven serving people, Steven giving the finger. I have enough of each kind (except of Steven looking to camera while I pretend to weigh a parcel) to fill up this whole birthday post that he doesn't want. We've been together for nearly a third of his life. He'd ask that you please not do the math.⠀ ⠀ The theme I went with is, Happy Birthday to the greatest, funniest, most thoughtful and loving, stupidest (in the best way), smartest, cutest, most tasteful and discerning (code for: make sure there’s a gift receipt) person I know, and how lucky am I? Looking forward to at least 40 more birthdays together! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This show made me so mad! (Yes, I watched all of it.)⠀ Here's just a starter list of all the things I wanted to be different about it. ⠀ ⠀ Clap for it on Medium if you like croissants!⠀ ⠀ No, really. Please clap for it. I don't care if you like croissants, or if you're gluten free and can't eat them. I want it to blow up like one of Emily's posts of herself making kissy-face in Paree with a tossed-off pun hashtag. @brigittemacronbm pls RT! ⠀ (You can go up to 50 on Medium with the clap button. 👏 )⠀ ⠀ Merci!⠀ ⠀ Link in bio and stories, or go to talkingshrimp.com/emily

I stand by this.

Was discussing this show with a friend who’s watched several episodes and had more to say about why it’s so annoying, so I decided to push further. I wanted to loathe it with more authority. It’s the responsible thing to do. Compiling my report.

⠀ Prague, 1995 (followed by other places and other years). So happy I did the things in my 20s that you're supposed to do in your 20s: make new best friends, be each other's wing women while stalking people who don't deserve you, travel and stay 3 to a bed in some random person's random extra apartment miles of cruddy cracked pavement and bombed out cold war buildings away from the main "old city" tourist area and be thrilled at the cheap cappuccinos and shitty food because it means you'll lose weight! ⠀ ⠀ Happy Birthday to my almost lifelong friend (we've tried to make up for the 22 years we didn't know each other), @victoriacook! Last time I posted this, I said we'd make new memories together (with new pics), and we did. ⠀ ⠀ I get chills when I picture us just meeting in 1992, our "first date" sitting on a bench outside Amsterdam's, and imagine telling those two 22-year-olds that three decades later they'll be (or have been) spending time together around the world as family, with their respective husbands and a teenage son/nephew (respectively) who's doing remote learning because of the pandemic (made worse by President Donald Trump), which is no more unfathomable to them than the mere idea of being 50. Or trying to grow back their old caterpillar brows. Love you so much!

I want your CLAPS! DM me the word "LAZY1" and I'll shoot you this article instantly. ⠀ ⠀ Or, find the link in my bio. ⠀ ⠀ This should make you feel better if you didn't end up learning French or writing your opus during the pandemic. But if you still want to, it'll help you do that! ⠀ ⠀ Truly one of the only "self-help" tips that ever worked for me. Mostly because I ignore them. ⠀ ⠀ Oh btw, did you know it's Self Improvement Month? I just found out, from some ad on Audible. Looks like I'm just in time. Very last day, true to form. ⠀ ⠀

Counterintuitive sucks for laptop design but works great for getting your emails opened. DM me the word “EMAIL1” and I’ll shoot you my guide to surprising subject lines that get your emails opened EVERY TIME(or, as often as I turn my laptop the wrong way).

Beware, fellow self-satisfied entrepreneurs: The problem with bragging about all your free time is that people call your bluff and want you to hang out and have coffee. Or lunch! In the middle of the day. ⠀ ⠀ And then they say "What do you mean you can't meet at 3? I thought you made your own schedule!" ⠀ ⠀ You tell that friend that what you meant was, working for yourself means getting to manage time really poorly -- on YOUR terms. ⠀ ⠀ It's the best.⠀ ⠀ (2020 update: Yes, I understand that some people with businesses are also homeschooling and don't have 100% control of how they waste their day.)⠀ ⠀ Seriously though, how would you rate your efficiency, on a scale of zero to "somebody take away my Instagram"?

There’s nothing shocking about this. The $12 million awarded to Breonna Taylor’s family in their civil case came off right away as a buy off gesture, a booby prize. My heart goes out not just to them, but to all the Black people I know (and don’t know) who’ve been up nights, for months, thinking about this and hoping that there would be an outcome that said the right thing. Instead, I know you’ve all received yet another message from some branch of power here that your lives don’t matter. This comes from a centuries-old system, yes, but it’s emboldened from the top (aka the rock bottom). I promise to do my part to vote the 💩 out. @colorofchange always has action to take in this fight, too. Reposted from @colorofchange SAY HER NAME: BREONNA TAYLOR. Our current justice & policing system has failed. It has failed to keep us safe, even in our own homes. It has failed to protect Black people or stem the tide of racist police violence. And today, it has failed to deliver justice for #BreonnaTaylor. For 194 days, folks in #Louisville have demanded the officers who murdered Breonna — Hankison, Mattingly, Cosgrove — are charged for her murder. @BLMLouisville and people across the nation have demanded JUSTICE, divestment from violent policing, and investments in Black lives. failure to bring charges for the murder of #BreonnaTaylor is another injustice. AG Daniel Cameron just told LMPD it is OK to kill Black people with impunity. His, and #Louisville leaders', decision to stand w/ the cops who murdered Breonna is why we shout #BLACKLIVESMATTER!

In my last post, a comment: “I didn’t follow you for your political opinion.” Politics are personal values, and these are mine.
