I took some much needed time off over the holidays so now that it’s 2020 I need to work down the backlog! Saddle Tail production here. The 2nd picture shows my 2”X72” grinder I spend many hours at this station. Looking to the left you see my vintage Delta Wood Metal saw that does most of its service as a heat sink for saddle rail heads. The 3rd picture is my lapping bench with granite lapping stations. Between the grinder and this bench many hours of the final finishing and assembly of Sterling Tools occurs. If you placed an order in December your Saddle Tail is in this batch!!! Happy New Year and thank you for your support!
Two of the new upgrades for my PM3520 Lathe. They are on the pricey side but as with all good tools you get what you pay for and these fill their purpose in great ways! The light system gets the light right where you need it, and I find I need more of it for detailed work in the last 5 years (getting old sucks!) the next item is the Lift Lock N Roll system made in AL!!! These lathes are a BEAST at 650+LBS and in my old shop that was bigger it never moved. In my new shop I need to move it from time to time and this system is a life and back saver!!!
It’s been 2.5 years and I finally realized that I needed to get over being hurt and angry about the tragedy with my shop move. Over the thanksgiving break with the help of my Dad we repaired and cleaned up my dear 3520A lathe. It was the first high end power tool that I purchased brand new and was very special. The loss during the move was devastating. She still has some scars but is cleaned up and put right again. The ballast box painting dresses her up nicely I think. I am looking forward to doing some woodworking during the holiday break and inhaling the future and exhaling the past! #moverssuck #insuranceloopholessuck #dontusebekins
The apprentice is learning the next steps of hammer assembly! Here he is drilling the handles prior to pining the head through the handles. What you can’t see is the drill press is foot actuated which provides use of both hands for additional control.
Jr has graduated to polishing on the lathe, over the next couple of months I will get a lot more help from my new apprentice. #toolmaking #apprentice
Many people have asked to see what I was talking about, while I took 8 hours to disassemble and polish all my brass back saws and stock Saddle Tails that were corroded like this. Here are two more saddle rails to show everyone the issue.
I need to share with everyone my AWFUL experience with this VCI corrosion projection paper. It’s the worst I have ever used. While it may work for steel, it turned every brass tool green. It’s marketed as multi metal but it’s garbage. Don’t buy it!!!
It’s been a real long time since I posted, the Sterling Tool Shop is about 85% complete. The woodworking shop is about 20% 😔. This weekend I decided I needed to get my bench area put together. Ahhhh that feels a little better!!! 😍🍻it’s a start...
We visited the very awesome @highlandwoodworking today. We thank them for being our first retailer, since 2014!!! We really appreciate the tour Molly!
My dear friend @gaugemaker1 has outdone himself with his latest release. Just in time for my holiday I received an absolute stunning marking knife. The cocobolo I am sure I’d from the same board that I have two special marking gauges from. Excellent balance, worth the iterations Jeff you got it nailed!!!
Had a run on orders for Plane hammers, or as @badaxe6 calls them saw tensioning hammers. These are handled up they will get flush cut and final lapping before getting fit with their “soft” spud. #woodworking #sterlingtoolworks #finetoolsthatinspire
Finally an AMAZING New England style IPA in AL that just rocks it!!! Thank you @sweetwaterbrew my new favorite IPA!!! Bye Bye 90 minute you have been replaced!
