This charming man, Emeritus Professor Martin Tattersall OM was recognised as the brilliant and committed father of Australian Medical Oncology. His achievements were many and extraordinary, his was truly a life well lived. Prof Tattersall’s impact will continue through the generations of clinicians and researchers that have directly benefitted from his leadership, mentorship, guidance and support. He was a compassionate teacher and friend for patients and colleagues alike. For our family his greatest achievement was the constant compassion, kindness and humanity with which he cared for his patients and our Mum. Cancer diagnosis and treatment can be terrifying, bewildering and dehumanising. Prof Tattersalls rooms were an oasis of how medicine can be when a doctor is committed to kindness. He was often referred the most complex and apparently hopeless of cases and offered hope in the knowledge that the life mattered and he was committed to their care. Not false hope, just taking the time to communicate and listen and agree a path through and a willingness to advocate on the patients behalf for best treatment available. It should be standard practice however for a myriad of reasons it’s not. Vale Prof Tattersall your wit, wisdom and twinkling eyes will be sadly missed. And thank you.
