I’ve never ridden in a Tuk Tuk before (there is one attached to the roof of @tuktukthaila) but the spread I had made me want to visit Thailand that much more. The expansive menu made it hard to choose, but of course we had to start with the drunken noodles and their crowd favorite: green curry fried rice. It’s cooked with green curry paste, so it’s a dry dish not sans sauce. Vibrant flavors, would order that again. Next, a bowl of yellow curry with huge chunks of carrots, potatoes, and chicken breast simmering in coconut milk. Mild and velvety. Need to try their beef shank massaman next time. From the charcoal grill section, we went with the Bangkok steak, Flank steak marinated black peppercorns garlic, cilantro, spicy lemongrass. Some pieces were a little tougher than others but the flavor was spot on. For seafood, a gigantic fried pompano with tamarind sauce appeared. Make sure to apply the sauce liberally with squeezes of lime juice. Been on a recent Filipino and Thai phase so had to get my sushi fix at a local ktown spot owned by a hardworking husband and wife team. I was hungry and ordered the $40 chirashi chock full of at least 5 different varieties of fish including copious chutoro. Also enjoyed their popular Orange roll because I love salmon. I was blown away by the amount of fish I received and had to split this into two meals. My side order of Hokkaido scallops were super fresh too. The wife came out with my takeout order and brought extra bags and helped me fit it into my backpack. Warm customer service with a smile. My interest in photography can be traced to my trip to Japan in 2013. From the raucous Tsukiji Market at 3am to the peaceful streets of Nara where the deer roamed free, inspiration was present everywhere you looked. Another day, another view. Glitzy, crowded Tokyo streets lit by neon signs. Fairy-tale Kyoto landscapes dotted with temples and gardens. Geishas giggling at golden hour. Steaming bowls of ramen topped with glistening pork belly. Freshly pounded mochi with the juiciest strawberries. Through the rich tapestry of food, culture, and traditions, I found connection - a connection that has been lost due to the current pandemic and travel quarantines. If you're craving something delicious, visit newly opened @ospivenice, just minutes from venice beach, where you will be delighted by one of the best pastas in recent memory. Say hello to the raschiatelli (aka cavatelli) with a spicy pork sparerib sugo that takes 36 hours to coax out the cavalcade of flavors. Love the crispy breadcrumbs that contrasted the creamy, rich pasta. Save room for the homemade cannolis - the best I've had. The crispy shell breaks apart with ease unlike the typical gummy ones sitting in a display case at an italian bakery. Stuffed with orange marmalade which reminded me of a bowl of Fruit Loops. Despite being only 2 weeks old, @leviathanencino fires on all cylinders from the kitchen (chef @dylanstage cooked in many kitchens in Spain and New York), the method of cooking (brick-walled fire pit running on wood), to the service (always a smile on the face of server/sommelier Austin Ferrier). Our party of four had the chance to sit at the chef's counter to watch the show with plexiglass dividers for safety. It was amazing to watch 3 chefs work out of such a small outdoor space and pumping out dish after dish that could belong in any museum. We couldn't decide which dishes to order so we went with the "fire the whole menu" option - the only way to avoid fomo. Think seafood-centric dishes in tapas format. Standouts for us included the spot prawn with bottarga, ocean trout with mustard, and the addicting salt cod on the sublime homemade sourdough made by @margaritakallaslee (we ordered another round after dinner). Not to worry if your guests are seafood-averse. There is an excellent wagyu ribeye and luxurious pork belly with crispy skin (both are must orders). The meal ended on a high note. I remember the creative bone marrow dessert from @scratchbarkitchen last year and this creation by Margarita did not disappoint. Sourdough panna cotta with citrus-honey caramel. Definitely get one of your own - sharing will only result in unflinching waves of regret. All in all, it was a unique experience - I've only seen hearth cooking on Netflix shows but this method of cooking really coaxes the flavor out of the seafood over time. Each piece of fish we enjoyed had perfect crispy skin covering velvety meat - not an easy feat to replicate consistently. Hurray! Another restaurant has been born in my neighborhood! Enter @hanchic.la a cozy spot specializing in modern Korean cuisine with elevated takes on fusion. For example, bulgogi risotto. Korean ravioli with bolognese. Bouillabaisse mixed with korean stew and noodles. I really enjoyed two dishes in particular. The “pork on crack” - a bowl of umami-laden rice with dollops of spicy pork with crispy seaweed and a bright yellow yolk beggin’ to be popped and mixed. Quite satisfying. The other dish is tteokbokki, aka stir-fried rice cakes and the version in my slideshow comes with a bolognese. Really great texture like mochi and the heat from the sauce makes it impossible to stop eating it by the spoonful. I’ll be back to try the rest of the menu! If you're near the Grove, satisfy your Thai craving at @thethaithing, a recipient of a Michelin Bib Gourmand last year. Grab a table in their cozy patio and definitely order the garlic noodles. They’re a new addition to the menu and they don't disappoint. The noodles are stir-fried with aromatic wok hay and the texture transported me to a hawker stall in Singapore. A must order is the Crispy Rice Salad - fried curry rice balls, cilantro, ginger, chili flakes, peanuts and ground pork, served with romaine lettuce for wrapping. Each bite was crunchy and addicting.
