Caroline Rose Giuliani, the daughter of Donald #Trump’s personal lawyer, has endorsed Joe Biden for president in an essay for Vanity Fair. Her father, Rudy Giuliani, has been one of the president’s most loyal backers, but, she writes, she and her father are “multiverses apart, politically and otherwise”. Ms. #Giuliani, 31, says the chasm between them has been painful, and has gradually grown worse during "Trump’s era of chest-thumping partisan tribalism.” In a quote that packs quite a punch, Ms. Giuliani writes: “If being the #daughter of a polarizing #mayor who became the #president’s personal #bulldog has taught me anything, it is that corruption starts with ‘yes-men’ and women, the #cronies who create an echo chamber of lies and subservience to maintain their proximity to #power.” And if that critique of Donald Trump’s government weren’t damning enough, Ms. Giuliani calls his administration a “nightmare” and claims the only hope for the nation is to vote for Joe #Biden and Kamala #Harris. She writes that she “may not be able to change [her] father’s mind, but, together, we can vote this toxic administration out of office.” Ms. Giuliani felt she “had to speak her mind” in this historical election, because “none of us can afford to be silent.” #Christmas dinner at the Giulianis’ should be interesting this year…

Brazilian police are used to finding crack money – but not like this. Senator Chico Rodrigues made an ass of himself when he was caught with #banknotes between his #buttcheeks on Wednesday. The close ally of President Jair Bolsonaro is in a hole after the #dirty cash was found during a police raid. It came amid an investigation into the misuse of #COVID-19 response funding in the senator’s state of #Roraima. Suspending Rodrigues from the Senate for 90 days on Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Luis Roberto Barroso said, ‘The police team possesses a video of the second personal search that was carried out. However, in this case, considering the manner in which the money was hidden by Senator Chico Rodrigues – quite deeply in his underwear – I will not reproduce these images in this report so as not to cause greater embarrassment.’ It makes a change from someone trousering illicit funds. Rodrigues confirmed in a statement that his house was raided, but refused to be bummed out by the controversy, claiming that he’d been clean throughout his 30-year #political career. Unlike the #money.

Your favorite #childhood #movies now have racism warnings as Disney reviews its back catalog. Racism warnings have been slapped on Peter Pan, #Dumbo and The Jungle Book, due to 'negative racial depictions and mistreatment of people or cultures.' An unskippable, 10-second message in front of controversial movies on #Disney+. 'These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,' it reads. The movie Dumbo has come under fire for its references to racist segregationist laws in the deep south, as well as its use of affected African-American voices. Peter Pan has also been listed, over scenes in which Peter and The Lost Boys dance in native American headdresses, seen now as a 'form of mockery and appropriation of Native peoples' culture and imagery.' And The Jungle Book has also been highlighted, for its perceived use of negative racial #stereotypes.

Japan is planning to release radioactive water from the crippled #Fukushima Power Plant into the #Pacific Ocean, in a move local fishermen say could destroy their industry. Japanese media reports that work to release the water into the #ocean would begin in 2022 at the earliest and take decades to complete. More than one million tonnes of contaminated water has been collected in tanks since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was ruined by the enormous earthquake and #tsunami in March 2011. The water becomes contaminated when it mixes with #water used to prevent Fukushima's three damaged reactor cores from #melting. The plant uses a filtration system that brings up tonnes of newer contaminated water and filters out most of the radioactive elements. The process only leaves tritium, which experts say is only harmful to humans in very large doses. Last week, #Japanese fishing industry representatives urged the government not to allow the release of the water into the #sea, saying it would undo years of work to restore their reputation. Nevertheless, the government says it will promote produce from Fukushima and address concerns from fishermen that consumers will shun their #seafood once the water is released.
