Ahoy there, sailor! ⛵️ Did you know Antigua has a UNESCO world heritage site? It’s home to the Western Hemisphere's only working Georgian dockyard, where Lord Nelson was based between 1784 and 1787. It seems he didn’t like his island home, calling it an “infernal hole” and “a vile spot”! I would have to disagree 😱 The dockyard has been fully restored and you can eat, sleep and drink here 🍹 amongst the original buildings from as far back as 1772! *It is obviously important to remember, as is marked by UNESCO in the inscription, that (and I’m using the UNESCO wording here) “the construction of the Dockyard by the British Navy would not have been possible without the labour of generations of enslaved Africans since the end of the 18th century.”* Have you visited a UNESCO world heritage site before? Let me know in the comments 👇🏻 #antigua #nelsonsdockyard
A rum a day keeps the doctor away 🍹🤪 And where better to drink rum than a beautiful deserted Caribbean island? So as promised here are a few facts about the island of Barbuda which you may or may not know: 🍹 Barbuda is located 60 km north-east of Antigua. Despite its proximity, it is largely untouched by tourism. 🍹Princess Diana loved vacationing here and was often photographed on the island. They named her favourite beach after her to mark her 50th birthday in 2011. 🍹 Barbuda was the first island hit by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and suffered very serious damage - all 1800 residents were evacuated. 🍹 It is home to a 17 mile long pink sand beach and the biggest Frigate Bird colony in the Western Hemisphere! 🍹 It has just the one settlement, Codrington, which is where most residents live. Comment below which you knew and which were a surprise👇🏻 #barbuda
PARADISE FOUND 🌴🏝 But how DO you find it? So many people have told me that they hadn’t heard of Barbuda before I visited last month! I’ll definitely be covering more about this beautiful island in the coming days as I truly believe it is an undiscovered paradise ☀️ But first things first, how do you actually get there? When I first started planning to visit Barbuda I was quite surprised by how little information was available... There are three ways to get from Antigua to Barbuda (you need to start in Antigua FYI): 🚢 The Ferry: the cheapest and slowest option! It’s also how we got there! At only $75 per person for a round trip it’s very economical but it takes at least 90 minutes each way. The con - it can be very rough so probably not the one if you get travel sick! My review - it was fun to travel with the locals but the amount of time it took was a little frustrating. ✈️ Small Plane: probably the most popular option! At $130 it’s not much more than the ferry but it’s a lot faster. Unfortunately it wasn’t available for our dates. You can’t book online, so contact the carrier SVGair to see when they are flying. 🚁 Helicopter: you can charter your own helicopter and get there within 15 minutes! Clearly the most glam option but at $1500 it’s also the priciest! Had you already heard of Barbuda? Would you put it on your list? ☀️🌴🏝 #barbuda #antiguaandbarbuda #paradisefound
WISHING YOU A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR 🌟 How has everyone’s first few days of January been? Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? NGL, I did spend Jan 1st sitting on the sofa bingeing How I Met Your Mother, but now I’m back and ready to leap into 2021 🏃🏻♀️ It’s that time of year where a lot of us make resolutions and whilst I don’t agree with resolutions which involve denying or punishing yourself, particularly in relation to exercise which should be fun, I do like the idea of positive goal-setting 🔛🔝 One of mine is to improve my running times 🏃🏻♀️ (I’ve been reading that when it comes to exercise, open-goals like this are more effective than specific ones 🤷🏻♀️) because for me, running has been a bit of a casualty of the winter weather now that gyms are closed again 🙈 it’s too tempting just to do virtual classes indoors and skip the run part! And also, to go on as many stunning hikes as possible of course! 🪵 this photo was taken hiking up to Shirley Heights in Antigua, taking the Lookout Trail up and the Carpenters Trail down 👊🏻💪🏻 I’d love to know what yours are! 👇🏻 #newyeargoals #newyearnewme #fitnessinspo #hikesofinstagram
Sunsets are reminders that endings can be beautiful too ✨🔥 As the sun sets on 2020 (😂 sorry I had to), I am sure we are all glad to see the back of this crazy and unexpected year. This time last year I was celebrating in NYC and I would never have imagined the year ahead we would have 😬 In between all the lockdowns I still managed to visit some amazing places and I appreciated every one so much more than the tens of trips I have taken in previous years as I felt so lucky to be there. 🏴 Scotland (twice) 🇺🇸 Oregon and California 🇫🇷 Paris 🇮🇹 Tuscany and Liguria 🇬🇷 Mykonos 🇩🇪 Bavaria 🇦🇬 Antigua and Barbuda Not to mention that the limitations on travel meant we explored the U.K. more and realised how much we have to be grateful for on our doorstep 💕 I hope you are also able to focus on some positives from 2020 as we welcomed in 2021 from the sofa 🛋 I’d love to know what they were for you 👇🏻 and I hope you celebrated with some bubbles too (the alcohol kind not the COVID kind) 🥂🍾 BRING IT ON 2021!!! I for one am counting down the days until next New Years Eve when I’ll be back in that bar in NYC 😉 #happynewyear #newyearseve #bringon2021 #goodbye2020
BUT CAN I TRAVEL TO ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA RIGHT NOW? The short answer is YES!! (But subject to the restrictions in your own country of course which you should follow.) It may not be possible for most people in the U.K. at the moment given the local restrictions but Antigua will be open and waiting when things start to get better! In order to enter Antigua and/or Barbuda you need: 🐚 evidence of a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test taken no more than seven days before arrival (needs to be done by a health professional) 🐚 completion of a Health Declaration Form (the airline will give you one to fill out at the airport) 🐚 temperature check when you land using thermal screening 🐚 you must have booked accommodation which in on the Government of Antigua and Barbuda’s Approved List (you can find this online by googling). In practice, every hotel I considered was on the list so it isn’t restrictive. It was actually pretty straightforward in the end, and it’s worth it to get to paradise right!🏝 The great thing is that you know everyone else on the plane and in the hotel have had a negative test as well. Would you travel to Antigua right now?#antigua #antiguaandbarbuda #safetravel (Note for my U.K. followers I was in Tier 2 when I left for this trip)
You can call me on my shell phone 🐚 Or actually, please don’t 😂 When we went to Antigua and Barbuda on 9th December, I wasn’t planning to stop posting on schedule and take a “real” holiday. But then we got there and I got so caught up in the moment that a week passed and then another! If there’s anything that 2020 has taught me it’s to live in the moment and to appreciate the good things, like holidays, even more. Taking the time out to reset and live in the present has totally changed my perspective and made me so much more positive going into 2021 💫 things WILL get back to normal! Let’s make 2021 the best year yet 💥 “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift––that is why it is called the present.” I hope you managed to take some time to yourself this holiday period in order to relax and recharge ❤️ #travel2020 #liveinthemoment #notimelikethepresent
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE 🤶🏻🎄 It’s not been the year, and, certainly in the U.K., not the Christmas we had hoped for, but wherever you are, I hope you are taking time to relax, eat good food, drink good wine, and spend time with loved ones virtually ❤️ We have just got back to London having spent the last two weeks in Antigua and after a mad dash to the supermarket last night will spend the day eating and drinking and watching Christmas specials 🍷 I have so much to share with you about our Antigua trip after Christmas but for now...have a good one wherever you are! Lots of love xxx ✨ Photo taken in New York this time last year. #merrychristmas #christmas2020 #covidchristmas
A hungersome wame haes nae lugs🍴I just love me a Scottish proverb...let me know what you think it means in the comments! I’ll give you a clue, it’s about food, and whilst you probably wouldn’t associate Skye with food, it’s actually a real destination for food lovers! It has six restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide, which is pretty impressive for a small island 🤤 here are my favourite restaurants on Skye, save this post for when you visit 👇🏻 🦪 @kinloch_lodge this hotel is an old hunting lodge by a loch and is so atmospheric - I loved the wood-panelled dining room lit my candle-light. It really gave me all the Scottish feels (the lodge used to have a Michelin star, this critic says bring it back 😂) 🦪 @thethreechimneysskye when you arrive at this old crofters cottage down a remote peninsula in Skye you definitely do not expect to find a Michelin guide restaurant (another one which used to have a star actually) ✨ loved sitting by the window watching the seals hanging out on the rocks 🦭 🦪 @scorrybreacrestaurant I’ve mentioned this one before I loved it so much, it’s in the capital Portree. There is a set tasting menu and wine pairing but they prepared me a fish menu as I let them know in advance. It only has a few table so you need to book far ahead! 🦪 @the_oyster_shed_skye probably up there as one of my all-time favourite places to eat 😂 it’s a takeaway with benches to eat at but the seafood is the freshest you’ll get, I am drooling thinking about all the scallops and langoustine 🤤 obviously I eat mine with chips 🍟
When life gives you mountains, put on your boots and hike 🥾🏔 And oh my goodness, Skye had some of the most incredible hiking I have ever seen 💛 The pinnacle you see jutting up here is the Old Man of Storr...legend has it that the Old Man was a giant who resided nearby. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb remained partially above ground. Hiking info: the hike starts about ten minutes outside of Portree (there is a car park although it gets full pretty early) and it’s a 2.5 mile round trip if you go straight up and back, but there’s a lot of scope to walk around the Old Man and I promise you will want to stop and take photos every five minted so I recommend leaving 2-3 hours to enjoy it fully 🤩 #oldmanofstorr #isleofskye #beautifulhikes
