happy mermaid chick set to surface any day now
A year ago one of my best friends had someone walk up to her and strangle her on the streets of Melbourne. A year ago another one was assaulted on the streets of London carrying toilet paper on her way home. A year ago my dad and I walked into a local foods store in my Vancouver neighborhood wearing masks, some of the first at the time to be doing so, and were glared at, shoo-ed and hustled out of the store like we were pests. This store now requires everybody to wear masks. Discrimination against my race isn’t new. My people have been treated like viruses since before the pandemic. The shooter in Atlanta with the “bad day”, pulled the trigger on a repressed rage that has been burning in different capacities all over the world. My heart goes out to every single victim, Asian or white, that lost their lives that day to this rage. I honestly find it hard to articulate all of my thoughts on this. Mostly because what happened didn’t shock me. As an Asian woman, a woman of color, in a society that consistently finds ways to remind us of our otherness, it did not shock me. It wasn’t something that came out of nowhere. It was an undeniably and tragically painful spatter from a pot that has been boiling for a very long time. I could write mine and my parents’ life’s stories to illustrate that. As an immigrant family that made its way to Canada in the early 90’s, we have had our share of aggressive discrimination. But this isn’t just about me. Nor is this just about America. While certain political leaders have given permission to supremacists to act on their hatred, that same hatred is simply simmering systemically in every other society. It’s in our daily rhetoric and it manifests itself in not just racism but misogyny and fetishization, and it permeates social culture and the delicate minds of humanity through every medium. In today’s day and age, I cannot fathom why there is not more growth in humanity. The color of your skin should not cost you your life. I don’t fucking care about your “bad day”. I speak on behalf of all people of color when I say WE have had BAD DAYS. (⬇️cont. in comments)

When the pandemic started almost a year ago now, all we could do and really felt safe doing was running away into the woods and losing ourselves there for even an afternoon. And in this time of uncertainty that we had never known the likes of, nothing was more assuring or comforting than the sweet motherly embrace of nature. Getting really good at mid day beer pong and Paint by Sticker books aside, this is how I spent my days.
I miss the sun on our backs
