Just finished my third week at @harvard (ICYMI - I'm getting my Teaching Certificate to become a better social media lecturer and educator)! ⁣ I'm only 1/3 of the way through -- but wanted to share one of my biggest takeaways so far. FINALLY just finished my 2020 accounting... tallying up how much money we earned (revenue), spent (expenses) and made (profit) in 2020.⁣ ⁣ It was a challenging year for so many of us small businesses, ⁣but I'm truly proud of not only our numbers - but also who we chose to do business with.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Back in 2019, I started a tradition that instead of focusing solely on how much money we made in a given year, I would also take a look at the hard data.⁣ ⁣ For example:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👩‍💻 32% of the business we did in 2020 was in the technology⁣ sector⁣⁣ 🖼 22% of our business was in interior design and aesthetics⁣⁣ 🍴 15% of our business was in the food industry (a girl's gotta eat)⁣⁣⁣ 🗞 8% of our business was in the media⁣⁣ space⁣ 🏀 5% of our business was in the sports industry (would not have anticipated this) 🏦 4% of our business was with financial institutions ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ But more urgently...⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 👭 36% of the business we did in 2020 was with female-owned businesses...⁣⁣ 👔 62% of the business we did in 2020 was with other small businesse⁣s 🤝🏾 and 59% of the business we did in 2020 was with minority-owned and operated businesses ⁣ ⁣ Point being:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Equally important to counting your 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 is counting your 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Are you choosing clients/vendors/employees who represent your values? And best interests?⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Is your business doing well 𝘢𝘯𝘥 doing good?⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If not, do better.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Let's go.

I didn't realize at the time just how important this would be.⁣ ⁣ When my puppy got her spade surgery earlier this year, she reacted poorly to the procedure, requiring multiple vet visits.⁣ ⁣ Later, when COVID-19 hit, I had peace of mind from the beginning, knowing that if myself or my husband were to get sick, I had that paid time off. (No one should have to worry more about getting paid and paying their rent, than getting sick.) Earlier this year, my social media studio celebrated 𝟏𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 in business (𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦?!) 😭 ⁣ My first reaction was to make a list of everything I want to accomplish over the next 10 years. This is going to sting.⁣. ⁣⁣⁣ Today is #WomensEqualityDay, and while many people on social media are celebrating the fact that some women were granted the right to vote 100 years ago this week - we still have so 💪🏿 much 💪🏽 work 💪🏻 to do before we can confidently put "women" and "equality" in the same sentence (or hashtag).⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Here are just a few of the injustices we, as women, battle on a daily basis. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Why do women pay higher interest rates, despite paying our loans back faster?⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Did your husband ever have to explain to anyone why he was (or, let's be real, wasn't) going to take your last name? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Men commit 96% of homicides (you read right). Yet somehow women are still pegged as the more emotional/impulsive gender. ⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Why do U.S. women earn 82 cents on the dollar, when public companies with women CEOs or CFOs are more profitable and produce better stock price performance than companies with men in those positions? (This wage gap is even worse if you're a woman of color.)⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🤷‍♀️ Name one reason your child has his or her father's last name, instead of yours.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ If we truly want equality, let's stop blindly abiding by the outdated traditions of prior generations. It's time to question our loyalty to traditions (dyk that the tradition of a woman taking her husband's last name is because - in centuries past - the woman went from being part of her parents’ family to becoming her husbands’ property?)⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ To strong women, girls, men and boys everywhere: Let's change the narrative, once and for all. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ P.S. 𝟔 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒 -- 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭?! 🤣 ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Everything you see on my feed (and everything you don't) is a direct result of this human I forced to have a Zoom photo shoot with me. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ From client management to caption writing to campaign brainstorming, Nicole has single-handedly pioneered more for our business than I could have ever imagined possible when I hired her 6 years ago - and she does it all with a smile (a super cute smile too -- look!) ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ When I met Nicole (on the internet, naturally), she was getting her Masters degree, and I remember thinking: I am pitching way out of my league here. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘰𝘣. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Somehow I convinced her to take a chance with me, and 6 years later, she has both smartened me up and also helped me grow my business to levels I only dreamed of. More impressively, she has helped me build a business on the VALUES we both hold closest to our chests: kindness, equality, gratitude, empathy and respect.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Unlike me, Nicole is understated, studious, book-obsessed... and introverted.
