Working alongside @lawrenceagyei to shoot Indya Moore for @vanityfair was an experience I’ll never forget. It was such a testament to the type of creative process I not only believe in but have strived to achieve my entire career. This was such an honor to be a part of. Proud to be your partner @lawrenceagyei. 🙏🏽

We teach girls to shrink themselves To make themselves smaller We say to girls "You can have ambition But not too much You should aim to be successful But not too successful Otherwise you will threaten the man" Because I am female I am expected to aspire to marriage I am expected to make my life choices Always keeping in mind that Marriage is the most important Now marriage can be a source of Joy and love and mutual support But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage And we don't teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors Not for jobs or for accomplishments Which I think can be a good thing But for the attention of men We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings In the way that boys are Feminist: the person who believes in the social Political, and economic equality of the sexes “Flawless” - Beyoncé, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie #selfportrait2020 #momentswithmydaughter #setdesigninmybedroom #1910ballgown #cleopatra #blackgirlsrockvintage

More amazing work from last summer shot by the incredibly talented @lawrenceagyei. @queenof_freckles was a dream to style in a 1970’s Estevez gown from my collection. @queenof_freckles forever obsessed with you and your beautiful energy. #blackgirlsrockvintage

Chicago has given me many opportunities to collaborate with other artists in ways that have fed untapped sides of my creative soul. @lawrenceagyei is an incredible young talent whose portraits carry meaning and depth for himself and his subjects. I feel honored to have styled for him in this series of Amber and Jade. Photographer : @lawrenceagyei Styling: @mtalty #blackgirlsrockvintage

A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I’m the queen. Self-Portrait, 2020. #onedayatatime #frozensoundstracksonrepeat #blackgirlsrockvintage

I believe that true artists aren’t very good at just honing in on one craft. They’ll push themselves to excel in anything, anyone that interests them. These people can often piss off others who would prefer to put them in a box or claim to respect them as an artist and despite that, will find the positive in any journey in order to survive. Opportunity and risk go hand in hand and within the commitment to their work, a deeper sense of self is revealed, that is necessary in order to grow. And I believe that during moments of growth, multi-disciplined artists will tend to retreat from this platform as it can sometimes become a weapon in the wrong hands. (Please don’t compare my life, work, or commitment level to a franchise style photographer, aka someone who’s bought the blueprint to their “aesthetic.” That’s like putting McDonalds and a farmers market in a ring to battle it out based on what a single consumer values. Or saying a Sears portrait photog is on the same level as a fine art photog...please, just don’t). More on that one day. But. Vulnerability cannot be disrespected when an artist admits who they are TO THEMSELVES. These stills are incredibly reflective of my truth, as it relates to my past and future. I taught myself how to shoot digitally in a time that demanded it, despite my background being film. Every project I have ever shot on digital has been done in FULL manual mode because my hands and eyes had a hard time agreeing with what the camera saw in any type of auto setting. Photography is one of the MANY things I am passionate about and I feel very thankful for all the experiences, and ALL the people that have helped me realize it’s never something I’ll abandon. These images were styled and shot for me, by me. Thank you to the two men in southern Indiana that underestimated me at an auction and tried their hardest to not let me walk away with this Hasselblad. But most importantly, thank you to @faithocean and @alizalyn for letting me be the crazy old eccentric lady, desperately needing to create in her happy place and test out her camera. You guys inspire the shit out of me and truly helped “wake me up inside.” #hasselblad501cm
