Here's @jillygrows, one of our Milkwood crew, on the Milkwood Packagery electric bike... headed to the post office with all the books you've ordered! Today is National Ride2Work Day in Australia and we're cheering on everyone who is able to - jump on a bike, and hopefully not just today...🚲 There are so many great things about riding a bike. The wheels going round as you cycle from one place to another, the wind in your hair, and all the views you get to see along the way. And cycling is a zero-emission transport. So if you do have access to a bike, and the privilege of ableism to jump on one, you’re doing your whole community a favour. Hooray! Do you ride to work? (Oh, and if you're working from home, we hope you get the chance to spin around the block sometime today too.) ☀️ #ride2work #milkwoodbook #milkwoodpermaculture #permaculturelife #rideyourbike
If you’re in Australia, this week we all have a chance to be part of a great citizen science project AND connect with the birds around us, as part of the #AussieBirdCount, running from Oct 19-25 as part of National Bird Week. 🦉. .⠀ By observing your local birds within a 20 minute period, you can help @birdlifeoz develop a better understanding of birds across Australia, while also getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep. ⠀ .⠀ It's a super exciting way to participate as a local community scientist, and support the permaculture principle to observe and interact with the spaces around you — to lead to a greater understanding for yourself, and others. ⠀ .⠀ You can be part of this fab activity no matter where your backyard happens to be — a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town. ⠀ .⠀ In a few easy steps, you can count, identify and submit your findings to the national register!⠀ .⠀ Head to www.aussiebirdcount.org.au for more info — there's heaps of great resources, live stats and an app you can download too. . What’s your fave bird that you’ve seen our your window? .⠀ #nationalbirdweek #observeandinteract #permacultureaustralia #australia⠀ ⠀
Using and valuing the marginal is an excellent permaculture life skill to learn – and who better to explore it with than David Holmgren? Watch our vid with Dave and then, once you're all inspired, we have a free foraging guide to help you start putting this all into practice, in your local 'hood. . Because finding and using the wild foods growing all around you is a perfect way to bring valuable/marginal resources into your kitchen – and also a most delicious way, might we add. . ⭐ The link to your free 'Intro to Foraging' Guide (+ video explainer with Dave) is in our profile today ⭐ . Foraging really is as simple as good knowledge, trusting yourself, and training your eyes to spot food where others might see nothing but useless weeds. But there are a few things to consider first, such as how and when to ask permission, what to include in your forager's toolkit and how to keep a map of the best wild food spots in your area. . Hop to it, grab your guide and let us know how you go! . *For any wild food - if you're not positive of the ID, don't consume it. And consider contaminants (like herbicide use, heavy metals or dog poo) when deciding where to forage from. Be well! . #milkwoodpermaculture #permaculturelivingcourse #foodisfree #permaculture #forageandharvest #foragedfood #davidholmgren #permacultureprinciples
In our part of the Southern Hemisphere, there’s a common word on our lips at the moment - tomato. . There’s certainly long held beliefs about when to get these babies in the ground for a wonderful crop. Around here it’s ‘After Show Day!’ [late October]. . We’re dreaming of fresh tomato salads and thick slices on toast. And a pantry with shelves of passata. It’s serious business. . @green.house.on.the.hill has been taking matters - literally - into her own hands: . “🍃🌻Give me all the sunshine 🌻🍃 This weather has been great to get out of the Covid-19 rut we have found ourselves slipping into. Today I made my own seed raising mix from a book I recently purchased which I know will become my bible from now on @milkwood_permaculture This mix includes: 2 parts compost, one part sand and two parts hydrated coconut coir. Also planted out some tomato seeds from my mama @sheffy58 🍅🌱 Feeling the productivity today.” . Hooray for shared seeds and giving them a beautiful start in their own special mix. . We start filming the Milkwood no-waste mushroom cultivation course today! Finally. . It’s been quite a journey, getting to this point - setting up a studio, making a ‘shed’ inside it, and then converting the ace mushroom cultivation course we’ve been teaching for 10 years to an online format, amidst lockdowns and distancing, has taken... lots longer than we thought, to put it nicely 🙈. . But with an amazing team in place, we’re finally at the filming bit of our next online course. Thank you Isis, Anna Lise, Lara, Jess, Kris and other associated legends. What a team. . Whoohoo! Can’t wait to share the results with y’all and help spread the home-scale mushroom growing goodness far and wide 🍄💚. . #milkwoodmushrooms #nowastemushroomcultivation #finally #showusyourspores #permaculture #milkwoodpermaculture #weareallthemycelium
Check out our new little patch of stormy sea, captured in the gorgeous kitchen tiles @ian_clare_studio_potter made for us 😍... . So - sourcing ethical kitchen tiles. We weren’t sure how to do it. Couldn’t find any 2nd hand ones we liked at the tip shops in nipaluna/Hobart, and then I fell into the vortex of ‘hand-made tiles of the world’ on the internet. All so amazing. But maybe also made in a sweatshop? We couldn’t tell. Hmm. So - off to our local potter, Ian. . Ian makes truly beautiful, functional objects, and he does also make tiles from scratch, but they were a bit outside our modest budget. So instead, Ian found some unglazed tile ‘blanks’ he had out the back, and over a few months played around with his custom glaze recipes - till he achieved this gorgeous green, literally just like the sea before a storm 😍. . From there, Ian hand-dipped and fired enough tiles for our stove and splash back. If I had my time again, now that I’ve seen these, I would’ve tiled MUCH more of the kitchen. Maybe the whole house, actually. Oh well. . Clearly I have no idea how to take a nice pic of shiny indoor tiles but hopefully you get the point - supporting local artisans is ace and results in much kitchen happiness all round ✌🏽. Thank you @ian_clare_studio_potter 💚 . #supportlocal #locallymade #localeconomy #howgoodaretiles
How to: Grow Great Tomatoes By Planting 'em Out Right 🍅 There's a few tricks to getting things right at the planting-out stage of tomatoes. Head to the link in our profile today for all our tips + advice, learned over YEARS of tomato growing... . If you're in the southern hemisphere, now's about the time to chuck your seedlings in the ground (depending where you live, of course - check your local knowledge bank first!) Y'know, the ones you grew from seed based on our advice a while ago, right? 😉 . Well, hold your horses, because first you need to consider crucial things such as soil prep, no-dig vs double-dig beds, mulching, trellising and planting techniques. . Phew. Overwhelmed yet? Don't worry, we break it all down into easy and manageable steps over on the blog... . PS - This is an extract from The Tomato chapter of our Milkwood book, which is available for purchase from our website if you'd like a copy in your hot little hands. . #milkwoodpermaculture #tomatoplants #tomatogarden #milkwoodbook #permacultureliving #permaculture #heirloomtomatoes #organicgardening
School holiday 'day trip to town', with bonus bushwalk... one of the many things I love about living near nipaluna/Hobart is you can always sneak a quick hiking track into the town-day schedule, because the mountain is so close to the city. . Day in Town: 1 hiking track (organ pipes at kunanyi) + two tip-shops + @tasmuseum + 1 sushi train + 3 boring (grown-up) errands + @fullersbookshop + 2 op-shops... . = home again in time for tea. . We're not being very adventurous these holidays - even though lutruwita/Tasmania is technically covid-free at the moment... this one day in town was enough for us. Mainly focussed on resting, planning, working, resting - in this eye of the storm of a time. Tho of course, with as much rock-sitting and mountain-gazing as possible ❤️ - Kirsten. . #kunanyi #asharfox
Sit quietly in your garden for a moment, watching and listening, and you may notice lots of little visitors...bees, bugs and lizards among them. 🐝 . These important critters and their friends play a huge role in our backyard ecosystems, helping to keep everything in balance and pests at bay. And the pollinators of course help in creating abundance in your patch! . If you’d like to encourage more garden visitors, get them to stay a while, or move in for good, you can make them a home. . @Rissyjane1, a passionate veggie gardener and student in our #permaculturelivingcourse, did just that! . She writes: “Bern and I made a big bug hotel. He made the frame then we filled it. Super cute and rustic perfect for our yard.” . This is only one of the many fab actions you can take in our 12-week online Permaculture Living course, where you choose projects that inspire you most for your everyday life. . Pop to the link in our bio to join the waitlist for our next course in 2021. 🌻 #milkwoodpermaculture #permaculturelivingcourse #permaculture #bughotel #pollinators #happygardens
How to: use plants as a paintbox [natural dyeing basics]. There's a link in our profile today to an article about this beautiful practice... . Because colour is all around us. In the stems of our salad sorrel. In our spice cabinets (hello, golden yellow turmeric). In mulberries, illawarra plums, rose petals, pomegrantes. In so many beautiful things! . Ready to play? Grab some raw silk or raw cotton, and head over our blog to learn how... . It'll be chaos crossed with discovery, which is the best kind. And all underlined by centuries of traditional techniques, and possible futures. . We recently stumbled across @sovereign_soil_farm in South Australia, who have awesome plans ahead for growing Indigenous and conventional food, herbs & flowers at a site north of Adelaide. 🌱 . Co-founders Dominic and Holly use three key words that weave it all together - . Food. Land. People. . From backgrounds in social and community health, they follow in the footsteps of communities who know that “social justice, wellbeing and environmentally sustainable food & farming practices are connected”. . So many of the principles of permaculture come to mind for us in learning about their work, especially valuing diversity and considering the margins. . “Sovereign Soil Farm will always be majority Blak and queer owned. We will mentor, employ and work with people who might otherwise feel cautious about entering food, gardening & farming spaces,” the pair say. . Want to help get their South Aussie farm off the ground? . Dominic and Holly are fundraising start-up capital at the moment.
