Ballpoint on vintage handkerchief. #maryjoypaño Inspired by the story of Olive Oatman. In 1851, Oatman was on a wagon train with her Mormon Zionist family on their way to what they thought was Shangri-La...beautiful Yuma, Arizona. They planned to homestead there and start a new community. They were trespassing in Yavapai territory and the wagon train was attacked and all but three people were massacred. Olive and her sister were taken alive and unharmed by the Yavapai. Their brother also survived by playing dead. He spent the next several years searching for his sisters. The girls were traded to the Mojave people about a year after their capture. The chief of a Mohave tribe had seen the poor treatment of the girls at the hands of the Yavapai and persisted in his efforts to rescue the girls. Olive’s sister Mary Ann died of starvation as the Mohave were suffering the effects of a drought. Olive spent 4 years with the Mohave where she acquired her tattoo. The sisters were treated as members of the tribe, loved and cherished. Her brother Lorenzo never gave up looking for her and found her 5 years after the massacre. She rejoined colonial society and spoke publicly of her experience. She was one of the first female public speakers in America and was tangentially associated with the early feminist movement in the USA. The tattoo she wore was given to her by her adoptive family as a sign of great respect, love and inclusion. #oliveoatman #tattoohistory
