“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!’l
Being human is the fastest way to becoming a human being. - I remember this quote from Atlas Shrugged: "We are all brothers under the skin--and I, for one, would be willing to skin humanity to prove it." - Well, I got skinned this weekend, by being brazenly human, along with other brothers and sisters, and re-learned the lesson of this quote once again. (Courtesy of @Inside_Circle) - Anger, hatred, and depression all require isolation: Separation from other humans--and what makes us each human. - The human experience is universal. Circumstances vary; people vary; and geography varies, but the kernel of humanity, as well as the pain that it sometimes brings, is universal. - Healing, however, too, is universal -- if, and only if, we surrender our fierce sense of individualism and see ourselves in others, and others in ourselves. - The "others" we need to see this in are sometimes those that society dehumanizes and literally cuts off from humanity the most: those behind bars-- and even those who who were incarcerated, did their time, and are now "free." - When we dehumanize even one person, we dehumanize ourselves. - When we cut ourselves off from emotion we dehumanize ourselves. - When we cannot forgive ourselves, often the hardest to forgive, we dehumanize ourselves. - Forgive. Empathize. Be human. - Thank you to Eldra Jackson III and Inside Circle for having me as your humble guest and for providing me with this incredible gift of a lifetime. 🙏
It's been a while Instagram. Hope your holiday season is a hole-in-one! (PS - Best gift ever.) - In all seriousness, this year has been an interesting and challenging ride. - I closed businesses and started others. - I ended relationships and started new ones. (Including most recently getting married.) - I willingly killed a part of myself and gave birth to a new one. - Part of that process -- becoming and embracing the real me -- attracted new people into my life: friends, customers, clients, a spouse, and business partners. People who realize the value of doing nothing more than making me laugh with putting and pooing... #puttingandpooing. (Shout-out to you MC!) ⛳️ - ...the journey continues. - Existence is not suffering; resistance is. - Wishing you a meaningful holiday full of many more laughs -- Jeff 🤗
545 x 7. Back on the #RoadTo700? 😬 — Been spending a lot of time outside of the gym — with other endeavors like mentoring #startups (appreciation gift 2nd pic ...yes, I look like a 3 year old at the beach wearing daddy’s hat) — so...it’s nice to hit something respectable! — Will I ever nail a 700lb #deadlift? 🔮
Confession: I've been doing drugs, like Schedule 1 totally illegal drugs. Yes, really. (And that's why I've barely been posting to IG.) - While Nancy Regan decided back in the 80's that this particular drug I have been using -- MDMA (also "Molly" or "Ecstasy") -- needs to be classed in a category that means it has no therapeutic value -- I will need to disagree. - Not only based on my recent experience with this drug -- or as I prefer to call it, medicine (administered by a trained professional) -- but the experience of many who also have suffered from #PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder), which is a condition affecting #mentalhealth caused by experiencing a terrifying event. - (And let's face it, for most of us have encountered at least one of these events, whether it was on a battlefield or not -- serious illness, family trauma, and emotional or physical abuse are just some examples.) - For years I barricaded myself in a fortress of machismo and numbness, which was originally fortified through the use of unequivocally non-therapeutic drugs. And later, post-rehab, through sheer denial and displacement: "success," "strength," "willpower"...the list does on...and each item deserves quotes for good reason -- none of it was real. (Uh-oh, if we "succeed" for reasons other than those generated by the true self, is it a recipe for disaster? I will bite my tongue, but just take a look at the headlines.) - Now I find myself focusing on what is real. And while I am still in a blissfully scary place figuring it all out, it has made it incredibly challenging to find the "right" content to post to Instagram, land of the happy, strong and successful. Right? :) - But that's just it -- and I do not want to pile on with social media's detractors (there certainly is some good) -- the landscape of social media is inherently illusory, if not deceptive. Deceptive not only to others, but more importantly, to ourselves. And what's worse, is that it conditions us to further bury ourselves in trenches of superficiality and denial. Maybe more so graves than trenches, as this outward display of a false self only kills the true, authentic self -- and if we are breathing, [cont.]
This sounds weird...but failing at business is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! 👏 — For the last several years I have volunteered to mentor Minority & Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) mentees for @sbagov. — Today was the kickoff of another season and I am PSYCHED. — Every season I get to teach, guide and lead businesses in this program to $1,000,000 and more. My main method of teaching? Highlighting my MANY, MANY failures! Seriously. 😂 — When you f*ck up you have two options: go cry about it and make sure it never happens again...by never trying — this works 100% of the time by the way 👎 — OR consider it “tuition” and learn how to hurtle forward wiser and farther the next time. I choose the latter. 😎 — Most of the time, I make this lesson #1 for my mentees, because fear of failure is paralyzing. And to #berelentless you need to keep moving! — If you’re in #NYC and are a female or minority #businessowner or #entrepreneur, sign up for this free program on the NYC.gov website! — If you’re lucky, you just might get me telling you about all of my royal screw-ups! 😜
Did you know that if you’re a dude under 50 in the USA, UK, or Canada if you die, chances are it’s because you took your own life? READ THAT AGAIN NOW. - “Long before I was a television fitness ‘personality’ with my own syndicated show, a roster of celebrity clients, and my own gym, I was a confused kid with anger issues, a drug problem and a talent for finding trouble. Alcohol, weed, benzos, meth, I took them all (OD-ing a couple times along the way). But my favorite drug was that intoxicating mix of adrenalin, endorphins and testosterone that always came with a good street brawl.” - New project. To be continued... - #menshealth #mentalhealth #suicideprevention #toxicmasculinity
Here’s why your plan sucks. ⤵️ - Whether it’s a business plan or fitness plan — really any type of plan — there are 3 common critical flaws... ❌❌❌ - 1. You’ve really thought it through (and that’s it). How many publicly traded companies run strategies that exist nowhere but the ether? How many rely on strategies and tactics that don’t take written P&L and cash flow projections? How many Olympic athletes don’t have clearly written programming? Write that 💩 down! Magic happens when you put words on a page. - 2. You’re more optimistic than a dieter on New Year’s Day. No need to be pessimistic, but consider best case scenarios a gift — not given. Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and know you’ll likely end up somewhere in the middle. Not recognizing worst case scenarios will leave you realizing that Sh*t Creek sucks, sucks worse without a paddle, and even worse when you don’t have a map to navigate out. 🧭 - 3. You have absolutely no way to reliably measure it. Are we profitable? Is that profit cash? (Oh waitttt...there’s a difference?) And sometimes measurement systems are highly flawed — remember when you just started lifting and your squat nearly doubled each month, so by now you should be squatting 10,000lbs or more? Exactly. The key is *reliably* measuring. 🌡 - Yes, planning can be more boring than watching someone read their PowerPoint slides word for word...but the results can be exciting AF! 🔥🔥🔥
