Martin Luther King said “judge a man by the content of his character, and not by the color of thy skin” well the same sentiment that was applied then to race relations should be applied to sexual orientation and identification. I would vote for #mayorpete based on the content of his character. I feel very fortunate to have been raised by my very liberal and progressive aunt and uncle. Sexuality or skin color was never even discussed. From a young age I was surrounded by people from all walks of life, skin colours, sexual preferences and religions. I never questioned or was confused by “gay” people, it was a norm I was surrounded by from a very young age. When my parents first split (when I was 8) my mother moved in with “Sandra & Marilyn” a lesbian couple that I had known since I was a toddler. My aunt & uncle who were my primary parental figures for a great deal of my life (and I lived with) had friends from every possible walk of life you can imagine. Gay/Straight, Black/White, Christian/Muslim or Atheist where not even terms of distinction or subjects of discussion as I grew up. “Love they neighbour” would be a sentiment that held true in my family and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” would probably be the motto in my family. I feel blessed to have been raised to have an open heart and and open mind. It’s 2019 and I feel I am still of a minority in terms of my liberal views and extreme open mindedness. The fact that the terms I listed above are still points of judgement or contention in this world is truly unfortunate. Why see the world in black and white when you can see it it technicolor? I beg people to open their minds, open their hearts and live a life of human decency.
