2020 in a single photo. Japantown, San Francisco, California, USA, around noon on 9.9.2020 When I woke up this morning around 9am, I tried to go back to sleep since the sky looked like 6am light (or so I’ve been told by people who are awake for sunrises). This is how the sky has looked all day due to smoke from the fires burning all over California, Oregon, & the rest of the West. We need to address climate change immediately. This should not become the new normal, but we are well along a path that will be even worse. As always, thanks to all the firefighters, health care & other workers, and volunteers helping people through all of *gestures broadly at this entire year*
I’m excited to get to try the California Craft Beer Summit Experience this weekend! It’s a virtual beer tasting featuring some of my favorite California breweries, supporting the California Craft Brewers Association
Birthdays are a bit different this year, but I made the best of it with takeout cocktails & food from Pacific Cocktail Haven & Pinoy Heritage for a Zoom happy hour with friends. Along with pork lumpia, I had my favorite cocktail in San Francisco, the Back in Black: Knob Creek Bourbon, bertoux brandy, salted black sesame, cynar, licor 43, & bitters
A year ago today, I was in Berlin for #BourdainDay, at the end of a trip that also included Italy & Scotland. Remember what it was like to go places? For this year’s celebration of Anthony Bourdain, I got delivery from Swan Oyster Depot, one of his (and my) San Francisco favorites. I’m eating this crab salad with crab fat vinaigrette & sourdough bread, wondering what Tony would be thinking about everything going on in the world right now. You know he would have some thoughts. Cheers to everyone today, I hope you’re all doing well right now & taking a moment to reflect on the good in life
Two years ago this week, I was in the midst of a cross-country road trip. I crossed all of Utah in a day, but I still managed to visit 2 of its gorgeous national parks, including Canyonlands. From Grand View Point, you can look across miles of winding canyons. Someday, I’d love to go back and get a closer look at everything down below #PPInspiredByUtah @visitutah @passionpassport #UtahFromHome
I’ve been back home for over a week now (story coming soon), but here’s a photo from central Leiden from over a month ago. Happy King’s Day to the Netherlands!
De Valk Molen, one of several windmills around Leiden, Netherlands
Who says you need to go outside to see wildlife? Through a window, I spotted these geese in the canal outside my apartment in Leiden
I’m currently in Leiden in the Netherlands, staying inside. But I have been out for walks around town a couple of times, keeping plenty of space. It’s pretty. There are windmills. Read about why I’m here: https://everybodyhatesatourist.net/my-month-so-far/ (link in bio)
A Sicilian orange grove with early spring flowers #discovercatania
While I was in Sicily, I had many cannoli. The ones at I Dolci di Nonna Vincenza in Catania were my favorites, especially the almond. They also have a shop in the airport, so I regret not filling my carry-on when I left for the Netherlands #discovercatania
I was only able to spend a couple of days in Sicily before I had to leave, but in that time I managed to have plenty of Etna wines & Sicilian salami #discovercatania
