Congratulations! You have found and moved into your new home, so what's next? Should you host a housewarming party? Absolutely! Is it tacky? Not at all. If you're ready to throw a housewarming, then that should mean you’re unpacked, decorated, and ready to entertain your loved ones. Hosting a housewarming party in an unfurnished, empty home is like asking someone out on a date and not bringing money to pay for it. Whether you want to do a virtual party or wait to safely host an in person party, you absolutely should celebrate moving into your home! Make sure your focus is on spending time with your friends and family. Try to maintain a "no gifts, please" stance to sidestep any mixed messages about the intent of the party. If you need a response for anyone that asks about bringing gifts, you can say, “Your presence is my present. I already have everything I need for the house, thank you." Guests might still show up with something in hand anyways, like a bottle of wine or potted plant, which you should accept graciously. Not sure how to handle work conflicts? My recommendation is to keep this conversation from escalating by not reacting instantly. If the incident happens publicly, you might want to take just a few moments to compose yourself and react, or you could delay the conversation until a private opportunity comes up later. Say something like, “‘Why don’t we take a break and come back and this finish later? I’m not comfortable doing so now.” Be sure to document the incident while it's fresh in your mind. Doing this will also help in case it escalates into harassment, and you need to take this up with your supervisor. My final tip: resist the urge to talk about this with other co-workers and possibly try to rally up the troops to your side.
