Today, Drake University dedicated a gathering space and entry to campus named the Bulldog Plaza. Located in front of Old Main, features of Bulldog Plaza include a larger-than-life statue of Griff I, the recently retired, inaugural Live Mascot of Drake University. The dedication also featured a “changing of the harness” ceremony, passing mascot responsibilities from Griff I to his heir, Griff II with a symbolic exchange of a dog harness. *All attendees were required to wear masks and maintain a social distance during this event, per campus protocols.

Drake University is collaborating with Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) to install new, public artwork on two bus shelters on the campus side of the street. This project is part of the city of Des Moines’ infrastructure and streetscape project on University Avenue spanning 25th Street to 31st Street. Meet Drake Bulldog Denisse López, a senior double majoring in International Relations and Sociology. She is a first-generation college student who grew up in Des Moines. Her family immigrated here from Mexico. She has been involved in La Fuerza Latina and gave a lecture for the group titled “Afrolatinidad and Why It Matters” as part of their National Hispanic Heritage Month programming. Do you recognize the famous Drake alumnus on that The Great British Bake Off @britishbakeoff cake? That is a cake version of author Bill Bryson. Bryson was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Drake University in 2009, and was a #Bucksbaum lecturer in 2009.
