Happy #WhaleWednesday! Did you know whales naturally combat climate change? They help remove carbon from the atmosphere in multiple ways! They distribute nutrient-rich waste that stimulates phytoplankton growth while they migrate as well as at the surface after deep dives. They also store more and more carbon throughout their lifetime, bringing it with them to the seafloor once they die and removing it from the atmospheric cycle. They're so helpful that the International Monetary Fund estimates that, between their economic role in ecotourism and carbon sequestering, each whale in the ocean fulfilling their ecological role is worth about $2 million to humans! Even those who put personal profit before nature and wildlife should have a difficult time trying to deny the irreplaceable importance of whales!
