Earlier this week I spent an unforgettable evening with what must be considered Swedish Cocktail Royalty.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The doyen of Drinkstagram in Sweden - @nick_falk and I went to the outstanding and sistinguisged bartender @johan_evers new bar - @abarcalledgemma ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What an evening it was. We had a number of amazing drinks but my absolute favorite was the Näck n' Neck. Johan's re-imagined Whiskey Soda. This was a drink so good that I had to come back the next day and try it again, and again.... I highly recommend it. Näck n' Neck - Nake Grouse, Bergamot, Moscato, Stonefruit and white tea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With A Bar Called Gemma Johan Evers has sown the seeds of a bar that will become a modern classic. The bar reminds me of one of my favorite NYC bars, Amor y Amargo - in the same way that both bars are intimate, run by bartenders who are passionate, knowledgable and knows that the most important ingredient for any bar is hospitality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ABarCalledGemma will continue to evolve, transform and morph over the years and I look forward to see all that Johan has planned for ABC Gemma.
Two fantastic drinks enjoyed at an amazing bar - @apropos_bar . This is a speakeasy done right, equal parts of an intimate old school bar from an era long gone mixed with two passionate, professional co-owners who are behind the stick every night. First drinks - "Rum and Coke", an amazing concoctions with no coke! Rum, China - China, house made tonic, lemon and Soda. "Pinkerton Tonic", a Gin and Tonic to rule them all. Gin, Amer Picon, Orange and Tonic. Second set, "Opera Flip" Scotch, egg yolk, sugar nutmeg and Champagne. - File this one under #drinkinghistory the recipe is from the 1920s. "Pine and Ember" Gin, Pine Liqueur, Berto Bianco Sour Candy gum and lapsang - pure delight. Thank you @apropos_bar
I’m coming out of Drinkstagram retirement :) for my most important post. My close friend @mmydrinks (as many of you know, our bromance is the stuff of legends.. ;) , needs our help. Mike and Emi lost their home, with all their possessions, in a fire. . They are safe. They got away with some injuries, which they will recover from, but lost everything but for the clothes in which they slept. . I know I am not alone when I say that @mmydrinks has had a huge positive impact on our Drinkstagram community. Now is the time show support for Mike and Emi. There is a Go Fund Me page set up, see link below and in my bio. Give and do what you can for Mike and Emi. . https://www.gofundme.com/emi-hamada-and-mike-yoshioka-lost-everything .
My friends! It’s time for me to say thank you and leave you with one last drink. It’s been an immense pleasure running #cocktail.guru and being an active part of our Drinkstagram community. I have experienced so much kindness, generosity and support during this time. Some of you, I have even had the privilege of meeting in person but even more, I have gotten to know through comments and DM and I consider you all my friends, but even if we haven’t communicated or met, thank you for letting my photos intrude upon your IG feed, it’s been a pleasure and a privilege. Although you probably won’t see me much on Instagram I am an email or text away, (email address in my profile bio). The account will remain as it is. I frequently use it to look up recipes and get ideas for what to make. I hope you also can find some inspiration and good drinks in the archives. I leave you, they way it all started, simple, humble and from the heart. This Negroni is for you 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️
When I read that this drink was “designed for all day drinking” I knew I had to give it a go. Sometimes I forget how incredibly delicious and satisfying something so simple as a Gin and Tonic can be. All you need is very good gin and a top notch tonic and clear ice. Thank you to all my friends who have shared their passion for Gin with me this year. I have been very fortunate to receive some amazing gin this year. Thank you @nick_falk @cyberdoggie @mmydrinks @narphorium @thetipsymuse @im_a_drunkard @mezcaldamen
Here is yet another amazing cocktail I had at @penny_and_bill in Stockholm. It’s a fun and innovate twist on the Planters Punch. The original recipe is "One of Sour, Two of Sweet, Three of Strong, Four of Weak”. In this version @gunroom 2 Ports Rum plays the part of Strong, a wonderful cinnamon syrup and a grapefruit sherbet is Sweet, Lemon is Sour and Vermouth and Sparkling wine is weak. It was absolutely amazing. . One last post from the “What happens in Palm Springs ends up on Instagram” series. Amaro Montenegro is a very versatile Amaro that can be deployed in a wide variety of cocktails with great success. Here are two cocktails by @itsmerobk where Amaro Montenegro shines! The first one is the fluffy I Dream of Monte. A deliciously dreamy, foamy drink with sweet condensed milk, orange juice, vanilla and of course Monte. It’s a simple, low ABV cocktail that is very delicious. Check out the foam on this baby 👌🏻 I might want to rest my head on it…. . The first manager I had when I moved to California told me the importance by leading by example and be the change you want to see. (On a side note, he is now about to open his own Rum / Tiki bar on Turks & Caicos, lucky him!). Anyway. Following up on my lament of the lack of #aqavitcocktails here is another great one. In this cocktail Aquavit shares the spotlight with Old Tom Gin, Vermouth Blanc and bit of Bigallet China-China Amer. This cocktail calls for Line Aquavit. A delicious Norwegian aquavit famous for it’s interesting maturation process. The potato based spirit is distilled with Scandinavian spices. The spirit is then put in Spanish Olorosso Casks and loaded on ships, for a journey around the world. Yup, that’s true. Its supposedly the changing temperature, humidity and agitation that leads to the delicious flavors in this Aquavit. . The Shanghai by Temperedspirits.com . 0.75 oz Old Tom Gin 0.75 oz Linie Aquavit 0.75 oz Dolin Blanc Vermouth 0.25 oz Bigallet China-China Amer 1 ds Orange Bitters
I was doing the math the other day and realized that I’ve spent half of my life in Sweden and half of my life living abroad 😲 That realization came as a surprise and made me a tad bit emotional. I loved my life in Sweden and love my life here in California but there is of course one thing I miss more than anything else. My parents and siblings in Sweden. . This one is for my Father who turned 85 this Fall. I am raising a glass in your honor, enjoying a cocktail I think you would wholeheartedly approve of~! It’s a delightful mix of Aquavit ( I am using @o.p.anderson your and granddad's favourite), Cynar and Sherry. It’s a twist on Robert Hess’ modern classic, - the Trident. Skål Pappa, jag älskar dig! . . Skåneish By Trillby & Chadwick Detective Agency @trillbychadwick . 1 oz O.P. Anderson Original Aquavit 0.75 oz Cynar 0.25 oz Pedro Ximenez 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters . Thank you @cyberdoggie for the glasses 🙏🏻
