Builders of the Ice Stupa in Shara Phuktsey celebrate after their 110-foot tower was declared the tallest stupa in Ladakh in 2019. Braving subzero temperatures, they had to climb the tower often to fix nozzles that had frozen and stopped spraying water. Konchok Namdol stands in front the Zingral Ice Stupa that he has helped built last winter. Konchok said: ”As I'm passionate about the environment, this is what I'm contributing. I want to deal with the problem of the draughts in Ladakh. The ice stupas could be a solution for a water problem for the mountain communities in Ladakh in India.” Follow the link in my profile to read the @natgeo story published globally in print and digital in July 2020. #natgeo #theicestupas #artificialglaciers #climatechange

The Zingral Ice Stupa was constructed below Chang La Pass on the road to Pangong lake, one of the famous tourist destinations of Ladakh. This Ice stupa was built by a group of ex-SECMOL students. Zingral is the coldest place to make an ice stupa, which is why they could spray water only for a couple of hours a day compared to other places.
