What’s your inseam? 👖 Now lets talk about privilege.... The other day I asked my IG storyfam to share which articles of clothing they found the most challenging to shop for. It was actually stemmed from a lesson regarding privilege outside of race. Long or short enough inseams was one...large bras without a heavy price tag was another...shoe sizes larger than 10...the list was pretty extensive. What I was hoping might happen, is that every single one of us would realize we have some things easier than others in this world, while simultaneously having our own unique challenges. Just as we don’t wake up with any control over the length of our legs and how easy/difficult it will be to find jeans to fit us, we have no control over where we are born, to whom we are born, and what our hair texture, or skin colour was destined for be. We just are. This is the same as privilege. Privilege is born within many of us whether we invited it or not, whether we are even aware of its existence. Its not for you to resist out of guilt, it’s there for you to acknowledge and use to advocate for others. It’s there when you walk up a flight of stairs while someone else searches for an elevator or a helping hand. It is there when you’re picking up foundation at your local drugstore, while someone else must search high and low for a match. The question isn’t whether you have any privilege, it’s what will you do with it to help others? If you can read, if you’ve got a family, if you had dinner tonight, if you have clean water to drink, you’re far better off than many. I think our biggest problem is that we’re so busy trying to justify and validate our own hurt, grief, disadvantages, that we totally dismiss those in greater distress. To my American insta fam...I hope you will use your opportunity to vote not just for yourself, but for those that may not have the same life advantages as you. This isn’t a time to think that “little old you” can’t make a difference. I promise you, you have so much more power than you can even imagine. Now imagine what you 👆🏽and you 👉🏽and you👇🏽 amounts to, collectively. A movement. That is power, beloved. 😉🙏🏽 • denim @madewell #madewelldenim
