Photos and video. ‘Gandalf’ lead me through trenches and fighting positions of Azov. An anti-tank rocket was lodged into a tree. Shrapnel and indirect fire from grenades, mortars, and artillery are a big risk for soldiers in Donbas (and around the world). ‘Gandalf’ experienced this firsthand; part of his left arm was amputated, and an eye damaged, after he was heavily wounded by shrapnel following a mortar strike.

I’ve been trying to secure funding and publishing for my most recent round of work and filmmaking projects in Ukraine. Recently I was offered a casual position and allocation of funds that will allow me to develop a full documentary project. I hope that it will make the most of my footage and reportage. Good outcome!

Ukraine has been receiving significant international media coverage lately, largely due to ongoing drama related to President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Sadly, very little recent coverage related to Ukraine even mentions the ongoing war in Donbas, or the fact that Ukrainians are still being killed almost daily at the frontlines. I have been writing regular pitches to Australian (and international) media hoping to get my recent work (stills, video, and writing) and reporting published, but frustratingly I receive no responses. I will keep trying.

Today I had the opportunity to document the work of a demining organisation in Donbas. Ukraine is currently one of the most heavily mined regions in the world; according to reports more than 1,900 people have been killed or severely injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance. Organisations regularly attend schools and perform education sessions for children, teaching them about the risks posed by unexploded ordnance and hidden mines. Clearing the minefields is slow and methodical work, and demining employees regularly find unexploded ordnance and weapons from World War 2. One day the war in Ukraine will properly end, but I think the cleaning of the landscape will continue for many years.
