October 16th marks #WorldFoodDay, an especially important date as COVID-19 is causing a global rise in food insecurity. Thanks to Canadian support, resourceful women are partnering with the World Food Programme to provide food for their families, through the ‘mask making livelihoods programme’ in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. As we celebrate World Food Day let’s remember that we must work together to end global hunger.

I met with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and heard some good ideas on how we can support small-scale farming in developing countries. We discussed the need for global food security, solutions to combat climate change and women's empowerment. With a vast majority of women in developing countries deriving their income from agriculture, we need to make sure women are central to the design and implementation of food security programs. @foodgrains #foodsecurity #CanadaAid

Even though we could not gather with our whole family this Thanksgiving, we decided to make a Turkey anyway. We will be eating Turkey soup and Turkey sandwiches for weeks! We are so grateful and thankful this year. We have our health, a safe and happy home, and a full stomach. I am in a job where I feel like I can truly help people. So many others out there are suffering this year - alone, isolated, sick or afraid. If you have a moment please reach out to someone who may not be as fortunate, to deliver a meal, do a wellness check on a neighbour or a senior, thank an essential worker or make a donation to a local charity. And remember, the greatest act of kindness you can do is to wear a mask, keep your distance and stay home when you are sick. Most of all, let’s take the message of Thanksgiving to heart and take a moment to think of the things in our lives that we have to be thankful for.

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, this year is particularly difficult with the isolation and anxiety due to Covid-19. Take a moment to reach out, sometimes a small act of kindness or social connection can make a big difference. And if you need support, find federal resources at

During the last election, constituents asked for funding to heighten and restore the Britannia pathway wall. Today I joined Minister Anita Anand and the National Capital Commission to announce $52.4 million federal funding for assets damaged in the last two floods, including the “Belltown Berm”. I remember the hundreds of volunteers spending days filling sandbags in 2017 and 2019 facing the stress of rising flood waters. Now our community will be better protected against future floods. The funding will also be used to restore the path and boardwalk at Mud Lake. I have assurances from the NCC that this will be done in adherence with the 2004 NCC Mud Lake Plan, and with full consultation with the community. As we take measures to fight climate change and to exceed our 2030 GHG reduction targets, our federal government understands that we also need to invest in climate mitigation, like berms, wetlands and natural infrastructure. Right here in Ottawa West-Nepean, the restored wetlands at the DND Carling campus helped to absorb much of the flood water in 2019 and keep it from flooding homes. Our federal government will continue to work with local communities to find innovative solutions like these.

I’m sad to hear of the passing of former Senator Nick Taylor, one of the most extraordinary men I have ever known. He embodied the spirit of Alberta. I first met him at my first-ever political event when he was leader of the Alberta Liberal Party. His kindness in listening to me might well be the reason there was ever a second political event! Then when I arrived on Parliament Hill as a young staffer looking to find my footing, he pronounced me to be a “stalwart of the Alberta Liberal Party” during a caucus meeting, giving me instant credibility. He was just like that. He could read people and command a room like no other. He was the funniest man you will ever meet - as long as you were on the right side of his sharp wit. He was kind, had a fierce determination and will, and he had an unparalleled passion for his province and his country. There’ll never be another like him. We will miss you Nick.

Today on #WorldTeachersDay as the world faces the worst health and economic crisis of our generation, we thank our teachers and educators who are continuing to be there to provide the quality education and support our kids need in these confusing and challenging times. Thankyou!

Today is #NationalSeniorsDay when we appreciate the seniors in our lives, thank them for their contributions in building our country, and remind them how much we love them, even if we see them only virtually. We continue to do what it takes to protect them and keep them safe. *photo taken pre-Covid19

Today I joined caucus colleagues wearing orange for #OrangeShirtDay. We remember the legacy and inter-generational harm caused by Residential Schools, we honour the survivors, and we recommit to ending systemic racism and doing better on reconciliation so that #EveryChildMatters.
