Flashback to the beginning of the Cookie Odyssey: second batch of @smittenkitchen’s Salted Chocolate Chunk (I’d messed up my flour amounts and had to remake), attempting to “style” a stack in the same two (?) places in my apartment with enough light for good photos. Ah, yes. March. We were so young and innocent then... 😂😭🍪
The joys of eating off each other’s plates, digging spoons into chicken porridge and ordering four different drinks just to taste them all. Licking nardello Russian dressing off my fingers, reveling at the jam of the day (cardamom and WHAT?), sitting side by side at a tiny sidewalk table surrounded by the chatter of strangers. Missing @sqirlla, missing restaurants, missing my friends. 💕
ICYMI: after 8 weeks (!!!) the Cookie Odyssey is officially complete! 🙏🏻 THANK YOU 🙏🏻 to everyone who followed along, DM’d recipe tips, shared personal baking stories and cheered me on. I started this on a whim, a place to focus my creative energy in this immeasurably scary time; I did NOT anticipate how completely joyful it would be, thanks in huge part to your enjoyment and support! If you missed any part of it, the Odyssey is saved in ✌🏻 parts in my highlights, and all recipes are available online (each is tagged). Keep baking, keep DM’ing me your favorites, eat a cookie (or four!). It’s kept me going. 🍪💕
Rhubarb update: cocktail syrup, compote, hazelnut galette... 💕🎀☺️
This weekend with my @kitchen.rodeo family: a taste of @king.newyork in my tiny Brooklyn home. Thanks to @clare.deboer and @jessieshad for walking me through my first go at clams (!!!) and being the most delightful, gracious teachers. Sitting down to lunch, @annie.shimcgregor’s wine pairing in hand, I felt like I was back in my favorite window seat at the restaurant (swipe left 💕🙏🏻). Maybe one of these days I’ll stop drinking out of old jam jars and buy a real wine glass? 😂
I found 🥰 rhubarb 🥰 on my grocery trip this week, but unfortunately... no 👆🏻. Anyone have any favorite strawberry-less rhubarb recipes to share? I’m thinking crumbles, compotes, cakes & shrubs!
Back before the world turned upside down, @irishfrecklegirl and I spent an afternoon in Echo Park, drinking iced coffee & recording an episode of her @family_meal_podcast. Obviously so much has changed since our conversation, but it was such a joyful moment to revisit as I quarantine here in Brooklyn! We talk career, heartbreak, solo travel (we both went to Italy on our own in 2019) and the recipes that bring us comfort. Check out the episode and the rest of Natalie’s brilliant podcast, now in its second season! 🍯🍏🍴
Let it be known I *did* celebrate Cinco De Mayo yesterday, only in the “throw it all in a bowl because oh shit it’s late and I’m starving” way. Today: WE PLATED. TY to @basically/@bonappetitmag for the fish taco recipe and @davocadoguy for the... well, you know. 😬🌮🥑
I made my first Tortilla Española yesterday, thanks to @senorhuertas and @kitchen.rodeo! 🥰🍳🥔 If you’ve seen my stories recently, you know I’ve (along with @hirefrank, @bettyliao and @kimbost) been working on @kitchen.rodeo for a little over a month now. KR was born from a desire to support the restaurant industry & create community around our tables in this unprecedented time. These live, virtual classes with chefs and hobbyists have raised over $36k (!!) for restaurant employee funds and charities supporting our frontline health workers. Fee free. I’m SO proud to be working on this. I love being a part of something that’s making a difference. I love seeing people learning and eating together, even if it’s through a screen. Follow us and spread the word! Maybe I’ll see you at the rodeo... 🙃☺️
A moment of true joy this birthday week: my Dad surprised my brother and I (at our separate apartments) with care packages from @supermoonbakehouse... and then we all did a rainy morning taste-test over FaceTime. My screen captures didn’t include sound (?) but I still smile so hard every time I watch them! 😭🙏🏻🥐
Moment of silence/appreciation/reverie for this lil strawberry slice that was so perfect I savored it over the course of 10 whole minutes (if you know me and desserts, that’s saying a LOT 😬).
This time last year... #IYKYK 💕🥐🙏🏻.
