A short drive away from Rotorua’s central business district, Hell’s Gate is situated on a geothermal reserve rich with history and cultural significance. Nearly 800 years ago Māori warriors would come to bathe their tired bodies after battle recognising the healing properties of the muds and waters which flow through the area. The reserve now contains walking tracks where visitors can see boiling mud, billowing steam and beautiful native bush. There is also a spa facility where people can bathe in the nutrient-rich waters and cover themselves from head to toe in our world-famous mud.
