We're sharing with you some of the treasures you'll be able to see when you visit The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries. Today, here is the Liber Regalis ('Royal Book'), a 14th-century illuminated manuscript with ceremonial instructions and the order of service for the coronation. It's thought to have been written for the coronation of Richard II's queen, Anne of Bohemia, and gives instructions for the crowning of a king, a king and queen together, and a queen alone. See the manuscript and a host of other treasures from our collections when you visit the #AbbeyGalleries. 'A burnish'd throne' - Antony and Cleopatra (Act II, Scene 1) The Coronation Chair is one of the most famous pieces of furniture in the world. Made of oak, it was originally decorated with coloured birds, animals and foliage on a gilt background. Twenty-six monarchs have been crowned in the Chair, including Henry V, Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and, most recently, HM The Queen on 2nd June 1953. You can see the Coronation Chair on display in the Abbey when you visit us. The Abbey's College Garden has been in cultivation for over 900 years. In monastic times, it was used to grow food and medicinal herbs for the occupants of the Abbey and had an orchard, fishponds, beehives and a vegetable plot. West of the sacrarium is the crossing or 'lantern', where the transepts intersect with the eastern bays of the nave that form the quire. Here a bomb fell in 1941, destroying the roof, which was restored and painted to a design by Stephen Dykes Bower in 1958. #WestminsterAbbey #history #visitlondon #ceiling #architecture
There are many animals on the tombs and memorials in the Abbey. This is one of our favourites - a sea horse, with the tail of a fish and the head of a horse, which is from the Three Captains memorial in the north transept. #WateryWonders #AnimalsInChurches #AnimalsInChurchesHour
The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries have re-opened for visiting and over the next few weeks we'll be showing you some of the treasures you'll be able to see when you visit us. First, here is the marriage licence of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Their wedding in the Abbey on 29 April 2011 was watched on television by an estimated two billion people worldwide. The illuminated floral border was painted by calligrapher Karl Stedman, and the licence bears the seal of the Court of Faculties of the Archbishop of Canterbury. This ticket is one of the thousands issued for the funeral of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, which was held in the Abbey #onthisday in 1892. Mourners packed the church for the service for the great Romantic poet, who had served as Poet Laureate for 42 years. The funeral included a setting of his poem Crossing the Bar by the Abbey organist, Frank Bridge. Queen Victoria sent a tribute of a laurel wreath containing an inset lyre. Tennyson was buried in the south transept, between the graves of John Dryden and Robert Browning, and his bust is on a pillar nearby. #WestminsterAbbey #Tennyson #poet #poetlaureate #poetry #history #heritage #memorial
'O monstrous beast' - Taming of the Shrew This 16th-century misericord in our Lady Chapel shows a wild man with a club fighting a monster. Misericords are hinged seats which tip up to form a ledge to lean on. They're often decorated with carvings depicting non-religious subjects including everyday scenes, animals and monsters. #ShakespeareSunday #WestminsterAbbey #history #arthistory #carving #misericord
