“Young people's voices are powerful. By empowering young people who have information and access, the word will get out and they will spread out to their peer groups." Nur Arifina Vivinia (Vivien) is a member of the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights. She works with @UNFPAIndonesia by coordinating youth engagement in emergencies programmes in a country that is on the frontline of increasingly extreme climate disasters. Vivien has been through more than a dozen disasters as a humanitarian worker. She says each one provides new opportunities to learn. “If you ensure young people’s voices are included in an emergency,” she says, “it improves inclusion during and after the recovery.” -- This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we celebrate humanitarian workers in the region who are striving to make a change amidst climate disasters. -- @unfpa @un_ocha @ochaasiapac @unep @unclimatechange #TheHumanRace
1/3 [view full photo on homepage @unfpa_asia] As the climate crisis intensifies, the impacts on women, girls and the most vulnerable are increasingly cause for alarm. Climate-related disasters are eroding the hard-fought progress on health and gender equality and stretching already under-funded health services in developing countries. The climate crisis affects the social and environmental determinants of health – safe and clean water, clean air, sanitation and sufficient food. Without these essentials, achieving sexual and reproductive health and rights becomes impossible. During high tide, many villages become inundated making large parts of the villages uninhabitable. As we brace for cycles of disaster and displacement, we can anticipate an increase in poverty along with spikes in gender-based violence and harmful practices like child-marriage. "We have a climate crisis: all the data points should be raising alarms” Susan Grey is the Executive Director of @femLINKpacific, a Pacific feminist media organization that supports a network of rural women in #Fiji as commnities brace for more extreme storms from climate change. “In the Pacific there are strong social and cultural norms, stereotypes about the role of women,” she says. “Some people have very rigid ideas and what women should be. Should they be in a place of leadership in the village or is their place in the kitchen?” Susan admits that entrenched patriarchal views are one obstacle, but not the only one. “The challenges in the fight for gender equality and gender justice are enormous,” she says. “But it is not just about the culture it is also the systems in place.” -- This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we celebrate humanitarian workers across the #AsiaPacific region who are striving to make a difference amidst the climate disasters. -- @unfpa @un_ocha @ochaasiapac @unep @unclimatechange
