#THExplains | Since October last year, Indian pharma companies have been under constant international scrutiny for exporting allegedly contaminated drugs, which have led to deaths of children. Recently, Nigeria raised the red flag on two oral drugs; Cameroon too sounded an alarm over another cough syrup reportedly made in India when several children died. Sri Lanka called out two drugs manufactured in India linking them to adverse reactions in several patients. In the latest move, Gambia has declared that from July 1, it is running strict quality control checks on all pharma products shipped into the country, before they leave Indian shores. A sharp increase in the retail prices of several crucial food items over the past one month has left households and small eatery operators scrambling to juggle their budgets. From essential vegetables of tomato, onion and potato to the basic cereals of rice and wheat, tur dal, the commonest protein source in vegetarian households, and even loose tea, have witnesses a price rise. Tomato prices have recently shot up in the markets across the country from ₹10-20 per kg to a price of ₹80-100 per kg. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain. The price of tomato in fact was highest as per government data in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, at ₹121 a kg as on June 28, 2023. What does this nationwide surge in food prices mean?
