Planet Schiaparelli  Elsa Schiaparelli spent her childhood attached to a telescope, pointing straight into the night’s sky, while listening to the astral stories of her uncle Giovanni, a renowned astronomer. She explored the stars and distant worlds, all of which she would later reference in her collections.
 Today, @danielroseberry continues to explore the Schiaparelli universe. Talking about the inspiration behind the Haute Couture SS22 collection, he says: “After years of thinking about the surreal, I found myself instead thinking about the empyreal: The heavens as a place to escape from the chaos of our planet, but also the home of a mythical high priestess, at once goddess and alien, who might in fact walk among us.” 

The collection is otherworldly to its core, reflecting distant universes and all-things celestial. Sharp tailored shapes with oversized collars are ready to take flight, an aerodynamic bustier in hand-forged metal encircled with rings of Saturn, black feathers levitating around a model like stars in the sky, and a sleeveless dress embroidered with enormous jewels is reminiscent of planets orbiting around the midnight black material. In 1938, Elsa ended up among the stars with her iconic Zodiac collection. She referenced Euclidean geometry in her silhouettes and the radiant colors of outer space. Hues were described as “Uranus yellow, Stratosphere purple, metallic flashes gun in Mercury color.”  In the summer of 1949, Schiaparelli stated that the stellar trend is “still in the air”. It was the year of the hurricane silhouette in which colors, once again, are those of the heavens: yellow sun, gray storm, black illuminated night, and angel white.

In 1939, the visionary Elsa Schiaparelli, perpetually influenced by her astral mind, presented the Zodiac collection. It was an embroidered tribute to the boundless universe of planets, the sun's reverberations, her famed astronomer uncle, and Louis XIV also known as The Sun King who constructed the magnificent Versailles in 1661 and later in 1686, the Place Vendôme.   One of the most impressive looks from the Zodiac collection was the Apollo of Versailles cape. The piece, embroidered by the famed house Lesage, features striking gold thread on black velvet. It was instantly worn by Schiap’s regular customer, Elsie de Wolfe, also known as Lady Mendl. The spectacular nature of the cape with its luminescent embroidery was inspired by the Apollo fountain in the Parc de Versailles.    “Time and space, light and shade, rest and action govern the destiny of our clothing tomorrows.” - Elsa Schiaparelli. The Schiaparelli Haute Couture SS22 pays homage to this #Apollo cape with an oversized spencer jacket worn front to back with a handmade version of the iconic embroidery, and with a long dress featuring the #ApolloofVersailles sun rays in a dégradé gold color scheme composed of blade threads, tubes, and gold beads, designed by @danielroseberry. #Schiaparelli #ElsaSchiaparelli #ElsiedeWolfe #LadyMendl
