Today is the birthday of Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, (15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, The Mousetrap, which was performed in the West End from 1952 to 2020, as well as six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies. Murder on the Orient Express is a work of detective fiction by English writer Agatha Christie featuring the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. It was first published in the United Kingdom by the Collins Crime Club on 1 January 1934. In the United States, it was published on 28 February 1934, under the title of Murder in the Calais Coach, by Dodd, Mead and Company. The UK edition retailed at seven shillings and sixpence (7/6) and the US edition at $2. The elegant train of the 1930s, the Orient Express, is stopped by heavy snowfall. A murder is discovered, and Poirot's trip home to London from the Middle East is interrupted to solve the case. The opening chapters of the novel take place in Istanbul. The rest of the novel takes place in Yugoslavia, with the train trapped between Vinkovci and Brod. In October 1882, Georges Nagelmackers successfully launched the first international express between Paris and Vienna. On 4th October 1883, he inaugurated the first journey of the Orient-Express, with what is now called a ‘press trip’, involving writers, journalists, and prominent figures. The train passed through the five States that had agreed, after lengthy negotiations, to allow the train to circulate (France, the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bulgaria and Romania). It stopped at Varna, on the Black Sea : the passengers then travelled to Constantinople by boat. The direct line between Paris and the capital of the Ottoman Empire was not completed until 1889. The train route across Europe therefore closely followed the contours of history, passing first through Vienna and Budapest. As of 1919, after the construction of the Simpson tunnel under the Alps, the train ran to Istanbul via Venice, Zagreb, and Sofia. The train was named the Simplon Orient-Express and represented the ultimate experience in luxury train travel.
